What are your favorite websites?

kelsmom posted on the U of Austin thread that the school will be just another ‘small ship in a big ocean’ which made me think of this live map of all the vessels currently on the move in the world: MarineTraffic: Global Ship Tracking Intelligence | AIS Marine Traffic

I am a scuba diver/marine enthusiast and also like this map that tracks tagged sharks, turtles, and dolphins, all for scientific research: OCEARCH Shark Tracker

For interesting newsworthy items across a wide variety of subjects, I like kottke.org. Jason Kottke’s blog has been around a long time, and with good reason.

What websites do you recommend for news, art, trivia, travel, hobbies, etc.?

My favorites are BBC and NYT complete with their “beyond the headlines” articles about the rest of the world, travel, science, and more, but the one my computer says I am on the most is Charles Schwab… (I enjoy watching the stock market.)

Does anyone really have enough time to spend anywhere but CC? This is it for me.

I can learn just about anything I need by asking a question on CC!

My mother-in-law was asking recently if I had seen the View From My Window group on Facebook. I had not, but I had seen WindowSwap which is similar and very cool w/o all the Facebook accompaniments.

Very cool, I was surprised to hear sounds from many of the windows/views! One of the “windows” that came up for me was a car driving the streets of Dar Es Salaam…lots of traffic!

I posted the view from our cabin on that page.

I visit Kitten Rescue Los Angeles (I can’t seem to copy and paste the url on my tablet, sorry.) They have a room with a mom cat and kittens and a camera. I have two cats and I’ll probably never have kittens again but I can watch these kittens do their kitten things. Some of the posters can be pretty amusing. I like to visit shetlandwebcams.com because it’s just so beautiful. And I use the Marine Traffic site mentioned above to check on the ferry between Aberdeen and the Shetland Islands. 12 hours overnight on the North Sea.

What a cool website! I just wasted – um, spent 15 minutes on there. I’ll be back.

This post amused me because my answer is the same as others!

Having said that, I spend a lot of time on The Guardian’s website, though I do get sometimes get sick of their clear liberal bias. I am liberal, btw, but I would love to read more neutral news stories. I love their human interest stories: a moment that changed me, experience, blind date. When I get fed up with The Guardian, I read BBC.

I go through phases of bingeing various websites: history, crime, antiques.

I’m sorry to say that I like YouTube. I love watching The History Guy. I am a sucker for Say Yes to the Dress, lol. I like Dr. Grande’s crime stories because he is so deadpan. I love that Polish girl, Karolina Zebrowska, who tries vintage everything: Victorian corsets, Edwardian hair remedies, flapper dresses, poodle skirts, you name it. She will make these things and wear them and use them. Let’s just say I’m glad I never had to be a Gibson Girl.

While at work, during down times – when I am not in here or checking scores at ESPN – I peruse restaurant menus online. I love planning meals, so I scout local restaurants for the next date night.

One of my favorite parts of planning a vacation is scouting the restaurants.

I like YouTube as well, will check out some of your suggestions as I’m not familiar with any of them. I mostly listen to music and/or watch concert video from my favorite artists on YouTube. I especially like some of the older concert footage from bands like Led Zeppelin during that era.

Ok wow, I showed this to my 10 year old (D30) and she’s obsessed! We logged in so she can link to the google maps and now it’s a geography lesson. She’s waiting for the perfect moment to film the view from our window :earth_americas:

Although I’d like to delete my Facebook account, I haven’t because of the What’s That BIrd, Insect, Mushroom, Plant, etc. pages. If I have some sort of specimen from nature that I’d like to have IDd, I take a photo and post it and literally within a minute, people will identify it for me! I’ve even submitted audios of bird calls and had the bird IDd. I know that there are other apps available that can do that, but with FB, it’s real people who are happy to answer questions.

Me too. The amount of live concert video there from classic rock bands is amazing.

I haven’t used FB for those types of things but I can see how it would be good to have experts involved. I have a plant identifier app that is really disappointing…it’s wrong a lot!

Same. So glad this footage isn’t lost. Here is one of my favorites: Led Zeppelin: Live on TV BYEN/Danmarks Radio [Full Performance] - YouTube

I love music on YouTube too.

One of my family’s favorite classical recordings is Sinfonia de Galicia’s Scheherazade.

We listen/watch it around the holidays a lot. At some point during the performance the conductor, Leif Segerstam, starts yelling and the first time we listened/watched it it took us completely by surprise.

Sometimes on my lunch break I enjoy checking out Airbnb for rentals. I save ones I find to certain cities we like or planned trips so it’s convenient to find later.

This is really akin to searching Zillow and Realtor.com which I already do since we are house searching. But same in that they are both a real estate drug….
