What are your guys' viewpoints on the following issues?

Human Trafficking

Child Abuse

Abortion

Capital Punishment

Basically post your opinions, I'm kind of in Peace&Social Justice right now, and as I was outlining our chapter, I kind of wanted to get what other people think.

Human Trafficking

A growing problem that is extremely disturbing. IMO, it is a disgusting issue that gets downplayed compared to the other biggies like abortion, murder, etc. There definitely needs to be more reform in stopping human trafficking.

Child Abuse

Another sad, sad issue. To me, the saddest part about child abuse is the cycle of violence. When children are exposed to that, especially during childhood, they grow up to be like that. (NOT in all cases) But there still is definitely a cycle there. To be honest, I haven't read anything concerning the issue in a while so I don't know the most current laws regarding it.

Abortion

I go to Catholic school where Abortion is the most talked about topic. We have the largest Pro-Life club in the state so we're a dominant pro-life group. However, although I consider myself pro-life, I do agree with more of the Mormon's standpoint on abortion: it's okay in certain circumstances such as rape, extremely young, etc.

Capital Punishment

Iffy on this issue because there is an alarming number of people who've been executed and then later acquitted of charges. Plus the whole process is more costly than sentencing someone to life in prison. Also, I feel like if you can prevent someone from committing crimes again via proficient prison systems then there is no need to have them killed. Even if it is good intention to have someone be put to death (Oh well they killed childen!) it still doesn't justify the sin of killing them.

Well as far as child abuse goes, I think it would be difficult to be "for" child abuse, so maybe you can clarify that one for me. But I am pro choice on abortion, but pro life on capital punishment. I don't think it's fair that we, the future taxpayers, will have to pay to maintain the lives of criminals, but I also don't want wrongly accused people killed. Granted that there haven't been a lot of wrongly accused deaths, there still have been over a hundred, and I think that is a substantial enough number to keep the other alive. But then again this probably represents a very small proportion of all executed criminals, so I guess I'm undecided on Capital Punishment.

Human Trafficking: I'm not an expert on the subject, but I saw a news report that discussed how women were lured into promises of being a star and instead were treated like slaves. Definitely should be stopped and prevented at all costs.

Child Abuse: Very unfortunate, being that child abuse does not just affect one person, because it's a cycle that causes others to be affected, too. Don't have any personal experience with this, but I can just imagine how emotionally (not just physically) damaged somebody can become for the rest of their life.

Abortion: It should not be banned, but at the same time it should not be allowed to be casually done. Women need the right to protect themselves and others by terminating a baby that could affect their health, but at the same time, repeat offenders should learn to take responsibility for their actions.

Capital Punishment: I am for the death penalty, but to the extent where the individual is obviously guilty (yes, I know that's a difficult term to define in a court room, but oh well). There are some people who obviously do not value their own life because they insist or ruining the lives of others, and don't deserve to be in our society any longer.

Human Trafficking
If you mean human forced relocation and slavery in the modern world, then I detest it. It is one of the biggest problems that modern society faces as a direct result of poverty and crime. This crime is a direct violation of the most basic human rights.

Child Abuse
A very sad and serious issue, and one that cannot be easily prevented. A larger governmental involvement is needed on this issue.

Abortion
Abortion is murder. That's my opinion. I don't give a damn about all those stupid claims about how a women gets to choose. Nobody should, the same way we don't get to "choose" to commit murder. I don't really see how any exceptions apply to this. Rape may be the leading cause of controversy in this issue but this case applies to only a very small minority of abortion cases. Mostly, today's abortion is used when the parents refuse to give a damn about the choices that they have made. Also, in developing nations abortion is used to discriminate based on gender, leading to an imbalance in the sex ratio through the murder of tens of millions of human beings every year. This is the true genocide that's going on in our society before us all the time. So I oppose abortion on every level.

Capital Punishment
Certain crimes cannot be justified by mere incarceration. Capital punishment should be kept legal, but implemented only after a comprehensive review of evidence and the facts.

Well, I'm not exactly saying Pro/Negative Child Abuse. The Chapter I'm reading only focuses on Abortion and Capital Punishment -- Human Trafficking and Child Abuse are some issues that I'm just passionate about myself.

Well, it's not like the child that was conceived because of rape is "messed up" or anything. The child's like any other kid. It's a kid. The mom could always give it up for adoption -- like Juno!

human trafficking and child abuse are both terrible and need to be dealt with. i feel bad for those who have no control

abortion= necessary for many people- especially young ones- no i am not religious at all- an embryo is almost microscopic- to me getting rid of that is nothing, but having a child born into a life thats not what he/she should get is just wrong- so i say yes to abortion

capital punishment- it depends on the crime, but if you kill an innocent person with intention, why do you deserve to live when the victim didnt get to?- i think capital punishment is necessary but the evidence must be air tight and if it's a crime that doesnt involve killing or multiple horrific rapes or something like that i dont think the person deserves to be executed

i'll try be short with this one...

Human Trafficking
horrible reality; more needs to be done to stop it

Child Abuse
horrible reality; more needs to be done to stop it

Abortion
horrible reality; more needs to be done to stop it

Capital Punishment
i'm not so sure about this one; at times i think "some people might 'deserve' it," other times... i just don't know

Human trafficking
Terrible tragedy.

Child abuse
Terrible tragedy.

Abortion
Terrible tragedy.

Capital punishment
Mixed thoughts.

-Bad
-Bad
-Don't care/Do what you want
-Good

Yeah I'm sort of harsh but I don't want taxpayers to waste money on murderers. Obviously there are some circumstances that change this, but for the most part I think those kinds of people are irreconcilable.

I concur with catsushi. This reminds me of a MUN conference. :)

Human Trafficking
Not an expert but I think it's absolutely atrocious. I watched a documentary on CNN about a situation in Bangladesh (I think) where illegal sex trafficking is one of the biggest industries.

Child Abuse
Given that I have neither gone through child abuse nor do I know anyone who has ever been abused, but child abuse is a serious issue and should be dealt with. That said, I don't know the prevalence of child abuse in our country but I suppose that a lot of it could is caused by underlying problems e.g. drug addiction, past criminal records, poverty and so these problems must be tackled as well.

Abortion
I come from a highly liberal all girl's school so I've grown up as pro-choice as you can be. I don't think abortions should be abused but it's really not in the government's right to regulate if a woman can change her body, especially if it is truly in her own interest. Legal abortions will prevent black market treatment with often ends with serious illness or death. People will always try to have abortions and there isn't much the government can do to stop it - all they can do is make it more safe. I think women considering abortions should weigh their options heavily and not abuse the ability to terminate a pregnancy as a form of birth control.

Capital Punishment
This should really be eradicated - a life sentence without parole is millions of times worse than quick death. Murderers should have to live with the grave consequences of their actions.

Human Trafficking
Awful. 'Nuff said.

Child Abuse
Same as above. I know several ipeople who have been abused, and I just don't get it...what could a young child possibly do to make you THAT angry?

Abortion
I agree with runspotrun. I would never have an abortion because I don't believe in it (even if it was due to rape, incest, etc...in my view it's not the baby's fault), but at the same time, I have a VERY big problem with the government telling a woman what she can or cannot do with her body. However, I would make sure that those considering abortion know that it was NEVER meant to be a form of birth control, and that they should, again as runspotrun said, weigh their options heavily.

Capital Punishment
Let 'em rot in jail and live with the weight of what they've done. Who are we to "play God", as people at my school like to call it? If it comes down to it, I'd rather they get shanked in prison and bleed to death. Nice and slow like.

Yeah, I just think .. isn't ironic that we, ourselves are killing someone just because they did the same?

Human Trafficking
I don't know too much about this, but in short, it's terrible and must be stopped.

Child Abuse
Same as above. Personally, I can't fully comprehend why a parent would deliberately harm and/or neglect a child. At the very least, parents should try to take care of their kids to the best of their financial/personal ability, or just find a better home for them..though this is more idealistic than realistic..

Abortion
I wouldn't have an abortion unless it was a case of rape/incest. I'm not entirely sure about defining whether a fetus is life or not; there are just so many ways to go about justifying that, but I don't feel that abortion is murder.. Still, I fully support Roe v. Wade -- all women should have the right to choose and make decisions regarding their body. Ultimately, most abortions probably wouldn't even need to be had if there was more effective sex education (if you're going to do it, please use condoms/other means of birth control!!)

Capital Punishment
I don't believe in the "eye for an eye" doctrine to begin with..so you can see where I'm going with this. I've never had anyone close to me murdered, so maybe I can't fully justify this belief, but deep down, I think there's something quite hypocritical (maybe that's not the best word to use) about killing to justify killing. Regarding the murderer and his/her punishment, I believe that sitting through prison and living with the consequences of his/her actions is more effective than mere capital punishment.

Abortion is all good. Even if they have nails, its not going to change my mind.

It's so obvious that you're a guy it's not even funny.

i know its not, but I do believe that abortion is ok. As long as its not a close hanger abortion. You are obviously a female. Go wear heels.

See, my reasoning is that if it's five months, then it would be cruel to have an abortion. But two weeks? You could say that it's cruel that we're not all making babies right now and are preventing the chance that somebody else could be given life. The fact is that people are born and die everyday, and sometimes you have to think about what would make everybody else the happiest.

Ever see that Law and Order episode about the man who was a baby from rape, and his father was black and his mother Chinese? He became a rapist himself because he was shunned by his family. His mother loved him, but was a little fearful of him because of how he reminded her of her traumatic incident everyday.

Hey, jmarin, maybe you should wear heels, too. They aren't just for women. The North Korean president likes to sport them, too.

no thanks, but i love law and order
I just saw the one about the pedophile ring
