What are your kid's (or kids') summer plans?

I posted this earlier, but I think the title was too vague. Perhaps this will work. :)

I'm a Stanford student interested in finding an interesting activity for this summer, something enriching and possibly life-changing.

As an example, a friend of mine went on an archeological dig last summer through Stanford. Another is going to the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). I'm trying to generate a bunch of ideas and thought you guys might have some good ones. What are your kids doing this summer? What do they wish they were doing?

Thanks!

S will be spending the summer at sea on a merchant ship

Both of my kiddos will be home working.

Wow, that's amazing!

How did he get involved with that? What do non-sailors (assuming he isn't a sailor) do on merchant ships? Is this like "running away to the merchant marine"?

Thumper,

What kind of work will your kids be doing? It might sound boring (or it might be boring, I don't know), but I'd love to hear more details.

My son will be working most of his.

My kids are doing the usual summer enrichment camps things, but my H, when he was in highschool, worked on the Aberdine pipeline...

Me, i worked at a lumber yard

Fun couple

My S will be working (canvassing for enviro group).

Son will be waiting tables. Daughter will be a lifeguard.

My Stanford son (now a grad) spent his last two summers as a student working for a temp agency. Nothing exciting, but it made money for college. What he WISHES he could be doing is working in Japan for a year.

My younger son will be (He hopes) attending 2-3 summer music programs and giving trumpet lessons to high school and middle school students when he is home. He may also end up at the temp agency or doing some other part-time work. What he wants to do is devote as much time to music as possible.

returningstudent,

Actually, my S is a Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY and he will spend a total of a year at sea while he is there.

when my older daughter was in high school, she volunteered summers as riding counselor at a residential camp, when she graduated, she moved up to riding staff.
She also has been an instructor at an education camp run by an aircraft museum, an instructor at an environmental science camp run by the parks dept and an instructor at a science summer program at her elementary school ( she also has been taking courses in the summer to lighten her load during the school year)

her high school age sister will be taking a math class and is hoping to be able to volunteer as a junior riding counselor

S1 (college freshman) will be spending a month with the Navy on boats, jets and submarines (NROTC requirement) and getting paid for it.
After that, he'll return home to work at a local grocery store where he worked all through high school.

S2(high sch. soph.) works at same gro. store as S1 and will do that this summer as well as volunteering at his high school's summer youth football camp and attending summer workouts for football.

Unless something else comes up, D will probably be doing volunteer work on a part-time basis with Jobs with Justice locally (with the possibility of getting paid) and/or working either at a bookstore or at a video store (where she worked last year).

My oldest will be spending the summer working for the county road crew, playing weddings and doing a lot of kayaking. My next one will be surviving Plebe Summer at the Naval Academy.

If my son gets accepted to college (he's applied a year early, as a junior), then he'll be spending the summer having a break from academics, and preparing for college. He's taken classes nonstop since he was a freshman (college during the summer), so he needs a break for once.

If he doesn't get accepted, he wants to spend the summer at U. Chicaco, studying Freud, because he's a big ol' neo-Freudian geek.

My 3 boys (ages 13, 16 and 18) will be working on a fish farm and (hopefully) helping to build a house.

My almost-16 yr old is doing the summer enrichment (Duke TIP) thing and working at the Subway where he "lives". I think he'll be paid in sandwiches. He goes there so often he just walked in, said "do you need summer help" and that was it!

My almost 20 yr old got the most wonderful research and development summer internship with GE Energy. The bad news is he won't be coming home for the summer, but its a great opportunity and they pay is unreal for someone his age!

My daughter will be doing a ministry internship through the Episcopal Church somewhere in the US- maybe Kentucky. There is a small amount of pay.
Wild Child is going to start college- he wants to take some summer school courses and live in Phila. He'll run and, for the first time, actually have a job. I'm sure it will still wind up costing me plenty!

jym626- My 11 yr old dreams of one day working at Subway. We are hoping it's a passing phase.
