I know that at Oxford you pick a major the minute you get there and only have classes in that subject until you graduate. I was loking into Oxford as well until I found this out

No, you pick a major when you apply, a whole year before you got there (should you be accepted)!!! It's not impossible to change, but very, very rare and most likely difficult (I've been here years and only know 2 people who changed). It's the same for most school in Europe. Scotland is apparently more flexible but it's still narrower that US colleges. You really have to be SURE.

Statistically foreign students are less likely to be accepted at Oxford than 'home' (UK and EU) students I think, so I don't think it's all that easy to get in. It's all based on this scary interview. Just like HYP applicants everyone has perfect stats so they don't give you any advantage. But neither do ECs (they just don't care about them). The competition is reduced by the rule preventing anyone applying to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same year. Certain unpopular subjects (mainly Chemistry) have about a 50% acceptance rate due to lack of students studying this in the UK as a whole.

The deadline for overseas students to apply for 2006 entry to Oxford was 1st October so you are too late for next year anyway. If you can pay you can probably get into most UK unis because they are all strapped for cash and need foreign students to subsidise the home students. Admissions are rolling for everywhere except Oxbridge and the deadline is January. They do seem to accept late applicants too though.
