What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

We went to Mamas Fish House for lunch when we were there. But there were 14 of us so hard to get dinner reservations.

Lahaina Grill, Merrimans, and Fleetwood on Maui. Dukes and Tidepools on Kauai.

I tried to get reservations for Duke’s on Kauai quite some time ago, and i was too early. Now it looks like I’m too later. ARGHH!!
I haven’t heard of Tidepools - will check it out.

What timeframe are you going? I can contact my Bonvoy Ambassador concierge and see what’s up if you like.

We just came back from Kaui and recommend The Eating House and Merrimans - they are both in the same mall in Koloa and are a bit pricey. For casual takeout, Hanalei Poke in Hanalei and Sushi Girl in Kilauea.

I also would highly recommend doing the departure gate verification if your airline offers that. We flew Southwest and mistakenly thought they would do it at our gate. Luckily, during DS’s wandering to find the bathroom, he ran across the location further down and we were able to get it taken care of. So nice when we landed in Kauai to be able to waltz out the airport doors instead of waiting in the extremely(!) long line of people still needing to do their verification.

That is very nice to offer for @1214mom.

I want to say what a nice group this is. Sometimes we forget but it really is a great community

Never heard of a Bonvoy ambassador. Is that a benefit as a Marriott member?

When you stay 100 nights and have a spend of 20K. Apparently there is a secret Cobalt Elite but non of us actually know any. Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador, and maybe Cobalt. It’s their loyalty program. It’s been great during Covid especially overseas with upgrades and such. Lots of Presidential and other suites and nice welcome gifts.

I just looked on our Marriott account. We have a boatload of points but haven’t travelled/stayed with them in a while. But we have 200 nights stayed. It says we have had 10 years as solver/gold/platinum; 3 years as gold/platinum and 1 year as platinum. Is that all adding up to a big nothing?

I was going to PM you, but looks like I can’t. We will be on Kauai Mar 5-12. Looking for reservations 8th-10th (ish) but flexible.

It’s annually 100 nights. Not sure on lower levels but I believe Platinum is 50, Titanium is 75, and Ambassador is 100. Ambassador also has he annual spend of 20k. Was 14K last year with Covid. You nights stayed total will count towards Lifetime status levels.

Got it. I will make an inquiry and let you know.

Thanks. These days we’ve been staying at air bnbs or VRBOs for the extra room.

Thanks. I just tried on-line today. Tried calling them too, but didn’t get to a real person. We are most interested in Duke’s, on the early side of dinner.

Some restaurants do not release their availability online until a few days out. This was the case with Mina’s on Oahu. Same thing happened at Canoe House… I recommend calling when they (Duke’s) are open for dinner and asking.

Mamma’s is one of our very favorite restaurants. When is your reservation? We’ll take it if you don’t want it😀 there aren’t any available now.

Pretty sure we will be keeping that one. If not I will consider PMing you.

We have tix and hotel for Japan for late June into mid July and fully expect we will have to cancel. They still aren’t even letting non citizens/residents in and even returning citizens have to quarantine ten days. I also don’t really want to wear a mask constantly including outside on my vacation. If we had family there I probably would feel differently bc we’d be in a home and less of a traditional tourist. As it is I just don’t think things are aligning for my family’s trip. We went in 2018 and then had to cancel the 2020 trip.

What are you hearing from your kid about travel restrictions and summer?

Right now they are being asked to stay on base except for necessities, which apparently means picking up take out is not a problem. Their base is 100% vaccinated. We have no exact plans - he will be there through 2023. He’s going to be on a boat starting in the spring, so any plans we make also have to revolve around his schedule.

This happened to us too when we went to Kauai last month. We flew SW and had a layover in LAX, and assumed it would be done at our gate leaving LAX. Nope. It was being handled at Gate 9 instead of our departure gate but we weren’t told anything, and it was too late when we found out. So we had to wait in Kauai for about 40 minutes to get through the line which was a little annoying since we had the QR codes all ready to go.

So ASK at your SW departure gate where to get the wristbands. And get there early enough to get it done before boarding.
