What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

It depends on the country and the hotel. There’re different rules in different countries. In some countries, you may have to go to designated quarantine facilities/hotels. Even if the country doesn’t have quarantine rules, some hotels won’t let you continue to stay in their hotels after you test positive. And rules/policies constantly change.

Sitting next to someone on a plane, with that someone likely unmasking to eat or drink, is pretty heavy-duty exposure.

It depends on your immune system. But you do bring up a good point is that mask mandate protects you as long as you don’t take the mask out to eat. I’ve seen people taking their time to drink their beverage, so the mask mandate is also moot. And don’t let me go on about people who don’t wear their masks properly either.
Also how many days after you are infected before it shows up on a test. A one day test doesn’t mean you are not infected either.

Pre covid plenty of people flew on planes while sick. and noone really ever masked. Also domestically there is no requirement. Why are the rules different internationally from domestically, if the risk is the same? In any case my question was related to If I test positive, what are the rules. I am bringing my own tests to test pre official test, as well as extra in case I get stuck.

And plenty of people got sick from flying on planes. It’s probably marginally better since the airlines beefed up fresh air circulation, but I recall reading many accounts of flights being a major vector for illness.

I got so sick after a long flight to Asia once. I will never fly again without a mask on. Ruined the trip.

This article says 42 confirmed cases of in-flight COVID-19 transmission total.

So much still doesn’t make sense. Just spent a week in Mexico, the facility required a PCR test of the unvaccinated and a self administered antigen test (take picture of result with your ID and sent it to us) for those with proof of vaccination. Most activities were in well ventilated areas or outside.

One can walk across the border to Mexico and then back again with out testing. The Canadians flying into the nearest US airport required a test. If they’d flown into Tijuana - no test. Either way, at the end of the stay the Canadians walked across the US border along with the rest of us…and off to the airport we went. No test required.

Generally if there are no Covid restrictions then there are no quarantine requirements either. And no “quarantine hotels” to go to. It will be up to you to decide how much you want to “hunker down” and up to the hotel if they have a room available, just as it would any other time you need to extend your stay.

The bigger issue is that BA may not simply switch your flight but may instead give a credit against the new return ticket. If the flight prices have gone up (which they certainly have since last year) then your replacement return flight may cost more.

Looks like summer travel will be a giant mess:

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/travel-chaos-summer-2022/index.html

I don’t think my niece had to test negative (some people continue to test positive for months), i think she just had to wait 5 days. She didn’t have any symptoms and never felt sick.

I believe the CDC rule is that a passenger who tested positive has to wait at least 5 days and test negative after 5 days (or longer) to board another flight (or alternatively, wait 10 days without another test). Enforcement by airlines, however, vary.

I’m at the gate at the Austin airport. There’s a fairly large group of tough looking guys, maybe late 20s, almost none of them wearing masks. What the heck?

The Coachella Music Festival is going on in Southern California this weekend. 150,000 people per day outside in the desert listening to music since Friday. This tells me that even here in California where we had lock downs and mask mandates longer than most states people are going on with their lives for better or worse.

I wore mask the other day in a supermarket, people looked at me strangely, like why was I wearing mask, it’s no longer required.

Anyway, back to traveling plan, I’ve been planning for 2023, I booked some places, all cancellable. I repeat the trip we canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, so looking at long term stay at one of the Greek islands, a few weeks in France after visiting the Normandy area, and a few weeks in the Lake District. However I still have no plan for 2 weeks in May, trying to decide what country to go.
In 2020, I planned to go to Amsterdam to see tulips, but May maybe too late for that.

I think when we wear masks, we remind people that the pandemic is still with us. Sorry, people, but it’s the truth.

Meanwhile, I’ve booked another domestic VRBO by a lake vacation for this summer. We’ll see what fall brings.

I don’t care what a random anti-masker would think of me when I shop with a mask on.

Planning a sparkling wine run to Eastern WA sometime in May. We drove there to get our first shots last year and did some wine tourism and liked it.

I don’t think they are anti maskers , but our county is no longer required wearing mask, they are just following the guidelines, it’s now a choice. Our senior center has the most vulnerable population, I play bridge with seniors in their 90s and none of them are wearing mask.
I think people are glad to get back to some form of normalization, not that they think the pandemic is over.

My (adult) D and I just booked a weeklong road trip for July - including an overnight in Morro Bay (going to see the Bruce Munro exhibit in Paso Robles (CA), next a 2 day river rafting/camping stop on the American River (bucket list item for us both), followed by overnights in Clarksburg, Santa Cruz and lastly Cambria. She & I have wanted to do a coastal California trip for about 20 years and we are finally doing it. We were able to secure pretty cool tiny houses along the way, one on a tiny vineyard. She’s in charge of all the stuff to see/do along the way. I do think Hearst Castle is in there, and she specifically asked to go through Napa/Sonoma. Guaranteed hiking & lots of outdoorsy stuff to break up the drives. I’m excited!

@JustaMom -sounds like an amazing trip. We love Paso Robles and did a trip there last June. Hearst Castle is also great to visit. Coastal California road trips are so much fun. We love the drive up the central coast to Big Sur.
