Lucky me, I’m flying tomorrow. I will still be wearing a mask but it will be interesting to see at the airport tomorrow how many people ditch them.
How do you think airlines sway? Make people happy to not have to wear one? Or make people happy to still require one?
My flight out of the US, obviously everyone was masked. Landed in Oslo for connecting flight - not one person on that flight was masked.
Well, now we’ll see just how wonderful their air filtration systems really are.
I’m planning to wear the best fitting N95 I can find for our flight later in the month. Planned wearing just a good surgical mask, but if everyone ditches theirs, I have to up it one notch. Don’t care what the rest of the pax would think.
I’m really torn about the lifting of the mandate because I don’t like wearing masks for flights over 2 hours plus or minus so I’ve been avoiding flights to Europe but I also don’t like the idea of flying with everyone unmasked. I think I’d still wear my kf94 masks when flying. They’re pretty comfortable and the idea of sharing air with hundreds of people in a metal tube still gives me pause. I’m definitely one of those having trouble re-entering with those that feel COVID is no big deal. I know my vaxes should protect me but somehow it’s tough for my head to believe it.
The airlines are in favor of dropping the mask mandate.
I suppose.
How many of you are unwilling to fly if the mask mandate is lifted?
Asking today? I would not fly today if the mandate was lifted. Ask me in 3 months again. I may (or may not) feel differently. But today, nope. And I may wear one evermore when flying.

Same 100%
Just heard on the news that airline staff groups (unions?) are asking customers to please consider continuing to mask.
I live in an area where mask wearing has been rare for many months so this is just one more thing. I’ll wear my mask, double up even, and still travel. I don’t care what others do and have been wearing my mask as I see fit depending on the circumstances. I will wear one on planes forever. I’ve gotten sick once already on a plane and will try not to repeat the experience. People in Asia have been doing so long before the pandemic.
I’m also worried we will start to see MORE alone staff shortages (resulting in cancelled or delayed flights)
I have a 2 hour trip in a month. My first since the pandemic - not thrilled with this change
I am concerned about the lifting of mask mandate on public transportation. This is sometimes a lower income group, and includes those without cars , disabled folks who cannot drive, and those who are not working at home. One of my kids cannot drive and has health conditions, and travels 45 minutes/day on public transportation. I am worried.
Yes, everyone is talking about airlines but absolutely this affects buses, trains, subways, etc. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out, in the sense of “May you live in interesting times.”
I think airlines are tired of fighting with people and having their employees harassed when they have to enforce a mask mandate. It’s the same problem grocery stores and retailers had. Being tasked with enforcing something a few find unpleasant or are proving a point.
All of us suffer by the actions of a (imo) few. But apparently personal freedom is the prevailing opinion today.
I could say for most personal freedoms that is.
Anyone know how this mask mandate change affects international flights? We’re flying to Vienna via LHR tomorrow on a BA/AA flight. We’re definitely wearing KN95 masks but wondering what everyone else will be doing.
Well, son has already said he likely doesn’t want me flying up to see him. His concern is the actual flight - both my health and potentially bringing infection even if I don’t get sick. I am not yet even sure how I feel about it! But he is and might be more amenable if the lifting of the mask mandate was based on medical data. We will keep an eye on the news. It may be a sad Mother’s Day for me.
From the Boston Globe…
“ The five largest US carriers — American Airlines Group Inc., Alaska Air Group Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc., Southwest Airlines Co. and United Airlines Holdings Inc. — said they were dropping their mandates effective immediately. Use of masks will be optional for both passengers and staff, they said.”
Wondering how this will affect travel? Will more folks travel….or less.
People are starved to travel. I think I read that air flight booking is at 90% of pre pandemic levels. Prices are up and the airlines are operating with less personnel and less flights.
People are traveling and most don’t care one iota about the mask mandate.
