There are so many other nice places to go besides Hawaii. It won’t bother me if they never open again, but I do wonder how the tourism industry there will survive. Shorter plane trips are easier.
I am thinking something Similar to you, @thumper1. Where we can drive, and enjoy the scenery even if we can’t go sit on restaurants for example.
Right…just looking for a change of scenery.
I’m not sure what the wink is suggesting, but my observations were quite different.
My husband I flew into Honolulu mid-February and then on to Maui after 4 days. We stayed on Maui about 3 weeks before returning to Chicago. My husband and I saw most international Asians at the gate/security/baggage claim wearing masks. It was such a strange sight for us that it made quite an impression.
In fact in Honolulu we got stuck behind what seemed like a huge group from China/Japan/Korea(?) on 2/15 and they were all wearing masks…this was an outside line to go through security. Frankly it made us want to keep our distance. Now I’m glad they were acting responsibly.
Not sure about Hawaii. But in Singapore, people who are supposed to be self quarantined get daily calls from government workers. If s/he wasn’t there, the penalty is severe. One American pilot found out the hard way:

Delta officially cancelled my flight to Italy in September. I haven’t cancelled my hotel or day tours, thinking it might be a slim chance yet.
But I’ve decided that eating inside a restaurant is just too big a risk, anywhere. To me, the experience and pleasure of dining in some wonderful places on vacation is a must, so the anxiety and worrying about catching Covid in them is a deal breaker.
I’m so sad. Will be cancelling next week.
I ate at a restaurant. Outdoor seating, paper menu. I felt fine.
I have tickets going to London and returning from Portugal late November. My girlfriends and I are still going. But the oddest thing just happened. I went online to check our flights (purchased with Frequent Flier Miles). Flight still going to London but the return is totally messed up. Did not receive any notification whatsoever. Our flight returning Lisbon to Philadelphia is completely missing but final leg Phil to San Diego is still there. What the hey??
I’m not going to bother calling them until next month because I know they are way busy. Flights still completely empty. We may decide to change to Spain for 2nd part of our trip
It isn’t just in the news. You can watch video of people doing this for yourself and then judge. I would be happy to send you a link to one such video. You can also see loads of video showing life in China now.
I think Japan probably has higher numbers than they are reporting and don’t think they have done nearly enough testing. Many complained they were sick and couldn’t get tested if under 30, for example.
any news on Florida lifting travel restrictions from NY?
We haven’t canceled our late July tip to France and Spain yet. I know the trip is not going to happen, but I cant’ make myself deal with it yet.
@Iglooo , I said eating indoors. I have no problems outdoors. Always a risk, it much lower. I hope to take advantage of that this summer.
@MaineLonghorn , I understand. I keep getting angry every time I think of our trip.
@conmama They had an indoor seating option, too. Now, I think I am ready for an indoor seating if it is not crowded.
Spain is opening July 1. No quarantine.
We are talking about a road trip to the Central Coast of California for some wine tasting in late October then on to Yosemite. Next February we’d like to do another 2 plus week ski trip here in the west with another visit to Yellowstone like we did this year. This would also be a road trip.
You may have to make a reservation to enter Yosemite. The current plan is to open the park early June but day use visitors will have to go on recreation.gov to reserve an entry date. The number of visitors will be cut in half from what the usual numbers are. They are planning to open the Ahwahnee and the Yosemite Lodge and half of the tent cabins at Curry Village. Visitors with reservations at those lodgings will not have to make a reservation for entry.

We just made reservations to get into Rocky Mountain NP which is opening up under these rules next week. You book a timed entry slot with a two hour window (8-10, 10-12, 12-2, 2-4) and pay for entry or link it to your national parks pass (there’s a $2 reservation fee also). There were about 500-600 slots for each two hour window. We did it on the first day of availability for a weekend in late June and several hundred spaces had already been taken, so it’s going to be filled up pretty soon.
Cutting to half is not enough at Yosemite. It is always way too crowded. They probably won’t run the shuttle. You then have to deal with traffic jam. Even with the shuttle there was traffic jam. Imagine what half of it will be like. Not much better.
@Iglooo Cutting to half in terms of entry permits allocated may mean that actual numbers entering are substantially below that level. It appears that there may be no provision to turn up on the day, and if people are booking months in advance then their plans may change and they just won’t show. Similar to the Half Dome permits where 300 per day sounds a lot but the actual number turning up is lower (so much so that in recent years they have quietly handed out extra on the day permits).
Add to that the lack of coach tours and foreign tourists and the crowds may be acceptable, especially if you have to walk to trailheads rather than taking the bus. Eliminating the spur of the moment day-trippers will cut the numbers a lot. We go in December most years and it isn’t crowded at all.
