My d has been acceptedw/ possible pell honors and a fine fin aid pkg. we have visited and while we agree how beautiful Newport and the campus is w/ it's mansions and seaside cliffwalk etc. we are skeptical of the strength and range of opportunities academically.

Also she has heard from kids at her HS that several students they know did not like it there and transferred. Also a family members d said the same thing about what kids she knows says.

I think the reason was mostly boredom.......Newport is a ghost town in the winter and they felt too isolated on campus since they are the only college in the area.

I do not want to pass by this school so quickly since they gave her a great fin pkg but I am beginning to be a skeptic.

She is considering two other schools as well w/ higher rankings but not as much aid. And there are pros and cons to them as well. Tough decision.

What do you know of Salve?

She is a strong student and citeria for entry was below hers ...will she be bored? Or should she make the most of her opportunity @ Salve and strive to ba at the top of her class in honors?

Rofl, luliztee....not at you or your d but at many fond memories of Newport. Having lived there I have a little input. I can't contribute to academic inquiries but socially Newport is a great town! I loved it while attending the US Navy Surface Warfare School there in the late 80's. Introduced two classmates to Salve Regina grads and eventual wives. I mention that because I have former collegues in the area and there is still the perception (or misconception) the college is a holding ground for women looking to earn their "MRS." because of its proximity to the Navy's SWOS and the surrounding affluence. Kind of an "Officer and a Gentleman" thing going on. fwiw, my friends wives went on to successful careers in nursing and journalism. congratulations and good luck to your d in all she does.

I don't know anything about this school, but I will say that they have a retention rate of 81%. That is a little lower than I would hope for, if I would be looking for my son, but not awful. If the money is great, why not let her stay over and explore it for a day or two? Nearly 60% graduate in 5 years. Remember that 25% of sat scores are below 500, but 25% are also above 580. My point is that there are some bright kids there too.

2 or 3 kids from our local high school usually end up going to Salve each year. It has had the reputation of a college for "not so bright, rich kids". Maybe it has improved in recent years. I understand that the male/female ratio is rather lopsided. Newport is a great town and Roger Williams University isn't that far away.

3girlsforme, What is Roger Williams reputation outside of the architecture major? Is it similar to Regina Salve in reputation?

It has a better reputation than Salve Regina. My oldest daughter used to go to a basketball camp there. I haven't been onto the campus in a few years but I remember the dorms as being really bad. Apparently the food is quite good. Salve has a more atmosphere.
