What book/strategies for CR and W

Hey, I got a 700 on both CR and W each. I want to get 750 cr and 800 writing. What books would be good for those two things? I was thinking

Rocket Review - Writing
Barrons 2400 or grammatix - reading

What do you guys think? Is a 150 point increase in those two sections from 700 each possible from now to oct SAT? Which book and what should my strategy be for over the summer? Thanks.

Well, let’s see. I got a 680CR and 650W my first time and I managed to go to a 760CR and 800W (similar to your goals). The key to scoring highly once you’re doing “pretty well” is simply practice. You don’t NEED more books. What you need is a bunch of practice tests. Do them all, understand each and every grammar rule, learn every vocab word that shows up, and really become solid at reading comprehension.

There’s a CC group with a farkload of tests. I suggest you go there, print out the tests, and do each and every one of them timed. After that review your answers, and do what I suggested above. You should reach your goals after doing this.

WEll, what books did you use to get the upper level strategies down? Because I took a ton of practice tests before my first sat and did well, but not good enough. I am hoping to get the exact scores you got (760 cr, 800 w). I heard people say RR is really good for writing and Barrons 2400 is good for those who want high scores. Can anyone give some other advice?

bump?..

wow this is strange
i was in a VERY similar situation in may
I took my SAT in march and got i think a 700 in CR and a 730 in W
before that i had taken maybe 15 practice tests so i ended up with a 2230 for that one, which is decent enough
I got like 3 CR and W workbooks and just did the practice tests
I already knew the grammar rules cuz i studied them for the psat and the CR just needed a LOT of practice
So i took it again in may and ended up with a 770 in CR and an 800 in W!

So a 150 pt increase is definitely within reach. What I suggest is get a few workbooks for CR and W. Writing is easier than CR in my opinion, and it will not be incredibly difficult for you to get an 800. I suggest looking at your kaplan SAT book, if you already have one, or getting a kaplan writing workbook. Their psat book did a really good job of explaining the grammar rules and they actually showed me that there are only about 5 things that can ever be wrong with the sentence on the SAT, which was incredibly nice. Just learn those and I’m sure with a bit of practice you can get a perfect on the writing mc.

I used to think that the reading section was totally unfair and that some of the things were just a matter of opinion. I got maybe 3 CR workbooks and did most of the practice tests. In these tests, I used the Kaplan Method. Im not a big Kaplan fan on most of the standardized tests, but I guess they do SAT well. Their strategy is to make one word summaries of every paragraph as you read it. After all the practice I did, I was unconsciously gaining the main idea of articles I would read in the magazine, understanding the authors motivation, and knowing the purpose of the passage. It was really really useful. Most of the vocabulary on the SAT isnt terribly hard, so I didnt study that, but I guess the most useful thing would be to study roots, suffixes, and prefixes.

So, in conclusion, it is possible to increase your score by 150pts because I did it. Memorize the grammar rules for the writing section (this wont take too long). Use the Kaplan method for the CR section.

bump…

Barron’s 2400. Quite good with grammar section. Don’t know about CR, but only because I didn’t do that section. ;)

[edit] but I still hear that Barron’s overall good for all three sections.

Cool, so I am hearing a lot of good stuff about barrons 2400, anyone know about RR cr?

bump…

Anyone care to rate rocket review?

So I have it that Kaplan and Barron is best for Writing?

This may just be me, but I found that the Barron’s 2400 wasn’t very helpful at all for CR and Writing. I ended up just using the regular Barron’s book and got an 800 for CR and 790 for Writing. This might just be me though- I have friends who recommended it highly (which was the reason I bought it in the first place).

which book is good at teaching all the grammar rules?

bump anyone have a good summer plan?

Best books for Vocabulary are Direct Hits, PR Hit Parade and Rocket Review.
Best book for grammar - a very good question.
