On the "interests" page of the application, they ask what books you read for pleasure, and what required readings you enjoyed most.
Do they want you to include as many of the books you read for pleasure as you can remember, or only a few that you really enjoyed?

A few. You're not going to impress them if you're trying to impress them. Just answer it honestly and let your personality show.

Columbia2002,

I am a small-time bibliophile, and I have read many books this year. I made a point to challenge myself with my selections- no more "Devil Wears Prada," or "Shopaholic."
If I packed the reading choices with books- some rare/difficult - will that make me look pretentious, like I am trying too hard? I do have a high verbal score, and my application is strong in English- so I hope it will be apparent that I'm not lying. Will this choice hurt me... and should I avoid doing this in the future?

if it goes well with the rest of your app it should be alright... and if you truely do enjoy these books then by all means put them down. but like columbia 2002 said.. the adcom is not going to be "impressed" by your reading list if thats what you are trying for. they are trying to see you as a person not to judge how well you read.

It sounds like you're exactly the type of person who SHOULD have that sort of a "pretentious" book list. It will go along with everything else.
