What books do I need/where to get the best deals?

Hello, I'm an incoming freshman. I have my official schedule now, and I'm trying to find out what books I need for my classes. I was looking on gold, but when I click the textbook info on the course info page, it takes me to the homepage of ucsbstuff, where I then have to chose what classes I am taking along with the professor teaching it. My problem is that it doesn't show some of my professors or even classes. Does this mean I don't need a book for those classes? My classes are CMPSC8 with Bouni, Math 3A with Long, WRIT 2 with Samuels, and MUS 17 with Marcus. Can someone help me with what books I need?

Also, is buying used from ucsbstuff.com the cheapest way of getting books? Is there a cheaper place or way, such as rental or online books?

half.com

amazon.com

the ucsb bookstore is a ripoff

Thank you for the websites, but can anyone help me figure out what books I need for my classes?

one of my teacher emailed us telling what book to get. and i tried ur method for my econ 1 class. and the book author is actually my teacher… im wondering right now if i should buy it …

Term: FALL 12 Name: ECON 1 Section: SONSTELIE Instructor: SONSTELIE Location:
Author SONSTELIE
Edition F12
ISBN 000000000000

this is my only problem. for the other classes they listed out the textbook very straightforward.

For writing classes, you usually don’t find out what books you need until the first day of class. And if a class is not listed, you probably need to buy a reader rather than a book.

What exactly is a reader?

it’s a person you hire to read your textbooks for you.

they’re just paperbound textbooks you can purchase from the copy shop in the UCen. some profs require them.

Haha, ok, so I can only buy the from UCen. Just to be clear, if my professor isnt listed on the ucsb bookstore link from the GOLD’s course info tab, then it would be ok to wait for the 1st day of class to buy any books for that class?

Waiting until classes start is usually the better way to go about buying books. Sometimes you can even reason that you don’t need to buy one and save some money.

Lookup your books on ucsbstuff.com and search the isbn numbers on aforementioned sites.

This.

I am quite partial to Craigslist–I usually find the lowest prices there.
