what books should i read before coming to college

i took AP English and i am offical done with that.. ive read quiet a lot of book...

ie. Things they carried, pygmalion, frankenstein, iliad, some bible, the flies, numerous plays...

what to read for the summer !!

master and margarita
some palahniuk (fight club, lullaby, diary)
american psycho

none of this "AP Engilsh" stuff, fer serious.

As in books that might prep you for college literature/philosophy courses or leisure books?

im reading for prep but it would be nice to know what pple were talking about in class if they mentioned a book..

Batman - The Dark Knight Returns

isnt that a comic... i read it in the library.. where i work..

Yea it's a comic, but it's still a book nonetheless. And a great one at that. It's pretty deep once you start analyzing it.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Here's my summer reading list (self-selected):
err, I haven't written in the author names for some of them.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being – Milan Kundera
Everything is Illuminated – Jonathan Safran Foer
The Elementary Particles – Michel Houellebecq
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius –
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter –
Cat’s Cradle, Slaughterhouse Five – Kurt Vonnegut
The Handmaid’s Tale –
The End of the Affair –
The Namesake – Jhumpa Lahiri
A Confederacy of Dunces –
Siddhartha –
The Picture of Dorian Gray –
The Other Boleyn Girl –
Blue Shoes and Happiness –
The Road – Cormac McCarthy
Water for Elephants –
Love in the Time of Cholera –
Life of Pi –

Handmaid's Tale by Atwood was horrible.

I'd recommend Stranger in a Strange Land, Brave New World, and As I Lay Dying.

^ I second the recommendation for Stranger in a Strange Land. Also, read Time Enough for Love (same author).

Siddhartha is very good, don't let the setting put you off.

hesse is fantastic, read spme of his short stories...and demian(my favorite)

jonathan safran foer is so overratted.

I disagree that The Handmaid's Tale is awful. Not one of my favorite books, but I found it to be an enjoyable read.

However, I love As I Lay Dying...much more than I like Handmaid's Tale, so I still approve of your literary tastes. And I do like Brave New World. Never read Stranger in a Strange Land...now I want to look into that.

How can anyone suggest anything from Ayn Rand? The woman is psycho.

I would suggest anything by Kurt Vonnegut

He's pretty much awesome

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Webster's dictionary, the influence of seapower upon history, War and Peace, Sun Tzu: The Art of War (original edition.)

For a healthy mix of leisure and school prep, I'd go with:

Homer- Iliad
Socrates- Four Texts
Italo Calvino-Baron in the Trees; Invisible Cities; Cloven Viscount
Jhumpa Lahiri-Interpreter of Maladies; The Namesake
Matt Ridley-The Genome
Kafka-Metamorphoses
Henry James-(anything)
Shakespeare-King Lear
Joseph Heller-Catch 22

Niiiiice. I'm starting on a German philosophy summer with Kant and company.

yeah, you basically cant go wrong with vonnegut, i love him. ive read some of this stuff for school, but i definitely want to read some of these ones that i havent.

"native son" by richard wright is something that every english teacher i've ever had has recommended, as well as "the fountainhead" by ayn rand.

"a rose for emily" by faulkner is something that both of my aunts who were english majors read 4-5 times in college. however, i would definitely avoid reading too much faulkner. bah.

orwell is a safe bet, as well as kerouac's "on the road", and vonnegut is definitely required.
