First off a little background information. Junior year of high school I took AP Calculus AB and got a 3 on the exam. Senior year I took Calc BC and stepped it up and managed to get a 5 BC score and a 5 AB subscore for the exam.

I just went to preview for the 17-18 session and all the advisors strongly recommend against going into MAC2313(calc 3), even if you receive 5's on the BC exam. Many said to even start back out at calc 1 and hopefully get an easy GPA booster. I chose that route when I chose my classes however, I'm starting to rethink this decision.

They told us that Calc 2 was the hardest of the calculus series and Calc 3 is a joke compared to to calc 1 and 2.

My question is to anyone who has any advice for me, or has already gone through the Calc series. Is it worth it to retake Calc 1 and Calc 2, hopefully for a good GPA booster and to reinforce my calculus skills? Or should I just hop right into calc 3?

If it helps I'm going in as an Electrical Engineering major.
The rest of my schedule looks like this:

CHM2045 (3 Credit hours)
CHM2045L (1 Credit Hour)
EGN1002 (1 Credit Hour)
ENC1101 (3 Credit Hours, 6000 words)
MAC2311 (4 Credit hours)

12 credit hours I figured would allow me for a bit of spare time to adjust and get involved around campus on my first semester.

Anyways, any help with the calculus course question would be great.

I was given a little different advice at Preview. I had a 5 on my BC AP course and was told, by the preview counselor and the math dept, to start with MAC2313. Hope I’m not in too deep.

Preview staff are pretty notorious for trying to dissuade kids from taking calc 3. I don’t know why. I don’t think they know what they’re talking about, or how ABPositive didn’t get the runaround.

Just take calc 3. Calc 2 sucks.

two reasons why I might not have gotten the runaround. one - I took Calc 3 through my HS at a local college. Scored well enough (b+) to pass on it, but decided might be good for a refersher. two - I checked with the math advisors before preview and had their buy-in on starting with MAC2313. Maybe that helped.

First off Calc 3 actually gets harder near the end. In no dimension is 3 a joke compared to 1. If you are EE major I recommend you either start in calc 2 or 3. Only you know how well you know this stuff. People can cram for the exams and get a 5 but forget right after graduation. If you feel strong in calculus I recommend you go to Calc 3. This helps you get your bearings in calc in a university, stregthen your knowledge, makes your first semester a bit more relaxing. Most engineering advisors would want you to have a super strong foundation before jumping into diff eq.

When is your intro to engineering class?

My intro to engineering is Thursday blocks 8-10

And thanks for the advice, as soon as classes open back up again on the 2nd I’ll definitely be making a few changes to my classes.
