yeah, I know: "this is the second half of chapter seven of this book I'm writing"...

you've inspired me, nelle.
i am now going to go out and write my first novel.
wish me luck!

I personally wouldn't send them excerpts. If your writing is really good enough, you can show that by winning an award... in the next month or so >_>

haha nelle, exactly... ahh not sure what to do i think ill just ask my GC, nelle, why dont you do the same and we can compare notes??? lol, thats kind of ironic in context (writers, notes....ahhh i dunno if anyone will get it haha)

yeah I'm not sure what I would do in that situation because you never know how different people will react to different things. I mean not everyone has the same taste in books and writing so that's a tough decision.

Well, people have different tastes in art (visual art, I mean) and many people still send in art supplements with photos of their work, etc.
I still think that it won't hurt you to send in some writing samples.

yeah it can't hurt! totally up to you!

Yeah, I'll see what I can come up with during Christmas break.
btles - go for it!!! =) It's actually really fun once you get past the first few chapters; the characters "come alive" and you can't wait to manipulate them some more!

I think sending in creative writing is a good idea. Your essays showcase your writing abilities to an extent, but you have to deal with word limits and the fact that you are trying to sum up your personality (or at least an important part of it) to somebody who has no clue who you are.

Maybe you could send it to a particular professor instead of the Dean of Admissions. I know that if you send in a music supplement it is evaluated by the Music Department or a professor connected to the department, so maybe you could have your writing pieces evaluated by a professor (who might have a little more time to look at it than a dean of admissions) and talk to the dean on your behalf if it's good?

I don't know, just a suggestion.

hmmm, if I actually knew any P-ton professors...

Haha well I know you don't know any of them, but you might be able to call and ask or look it up. I know somebody who sent in a creative writing supplement to Yale last year (accepted) and he just called the office and asked who he should sent it to and they told him. I'm assuming the same thing could work at Princeton?

If they want an evaluation of a writing sample, they'll pass it along to someone in the Program in Creative Writing or the Council of the Humanities. Don't worry about wasting the admission officers' time, since they won't be doing the evaluation.

As I noted previously, if there is any era in Princeton admissions history where talent in the creative and performing arts is an asset, this is it. Take advantage of this window of opportunity to explain and demonstrate what you could contribute to Princeton's new commitment to the centrality of the arts. See

http://www.princeton.edu/arts/center/

Remember, a huge part of what they're looking as they put together the class is "fit". If you can make a strong case that you're a good fit for the new University Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, that will help you.

thanks hbarns!

does anyone know where we can get the email addresses of regional directors? some other colleges list them on their website. i guess getting in touch with the regional director would be a nice way to being interacting with the admissions officers :)

also, do you think it will help if I get in touch with Profs of my prospective major??

Pton doesn't do regional directors. I'm not really sure why.

I was wondering what you guys think of this: My contribution to the creative arts is wto fold. Firstly, I have been involved in lighting design in my school to such an extent as to be hired by the county to do work for them. I know Pton doesn't accent this area of the arts very heavily, but someone has got to do what I am quite proficient in. Additionally, I started my own business in film making. I create video slideshows (montages) for special occasions for families around here. Though I did submit a supplment of these montages, I never felt like it got in the right hands. I was wondering the best way to go about "showing off" these two qualities and accenting them to the right people. I have done SOME research, and found two professors that seem like my best bets. How should I get in touch with them though? What is the next step? I kind of want to establish an email relationship with one (or both) and then at some point in the next month and a half or two months, meet up with them. In the end I hope I can prove to them that if given the chance at Princeton, my already acquired knowledge would give me a great start in courses I want to take...but more importantly, I would be using this knowledge to furthur the visual arts and creative arts programs at Pton.

I guess what I truly want to do is establish a contact that will vouch for me on the premise that if I get in, I can do a lot of good, and thusly, helping me get in. I would appreciate any elaboration on the subject..such as what to do or who to speak to, or just any advice that you deem helpful at all. Thanks.

Jason

jokeheads: i guess pton does have regional directors... some ccers in the past have talked to their regional directors over the phone..

Well I'd absolutely like confirmation on that. I was told they don't have any.

I've talked to mine...

while she was reading my file - thus they do exist, but I guess the team is more important than the RD.

Dunno who you could find out though - maybe call and tell the secretary where you are from and you might get her on the phone...

Best luck with this.

i actually called and asked for my reigional director and the secretary told me they didnt have any... however, all email contact and phone contact has been with one rep, the same rep who visited my school....so mabye they do have reigonal ppl...its really confusing

My GC called - they knew who I was before he even told them who he was calling about ("Ah, you must be calling about ____!") - they told him there was nothing wrong with my application, but they're waiting to evaluate me with the RD pool. Much of my application is my personality, and I believe they're looking to see if there will be another applicant with better stats and a similar personality.

Either way, its heartening that they couldnt find anything bad to tell me, and that the admissions staff knows me by name already. I'm going to blitz senior grades now...I'm writing extra papers for different subjects, and in general, I am doing everything I can to bring my average up to insane heights.

I want to give them every possible reason to accept me.

i'm really curious to know about my app, but have refrained from calling myself....should i you think? my sis says not to bother them, but i really want to know if i can aid my app in anyway
