What can I do as a freshman in high school in order to go to UNC-CH?

Hi,
I am a freshman in high school. I'm 14 and have been a citizen of NC my whole life. UNC is my dream school, it always has, and always will be. I started high school 3 weeks ago, and although I realize it's early I want to know what I can do to better my chances of being accepted. I am taking the most hardest classes I can take. Sadly, in middle school, I didn't really apply myself, so my schedule isn't the hardest one availabe. I'm taking World History Honors, English 1 Honors and, Earth/Envirnomenal Science. While other kids are taking 4 or 5 honors. Anyway I'm in the marching band and just recentely joined FBLA (Future Bussiness Leaders of America.) I am going to a fairly big, well known public school, Porter Ridge High School, and just want to know if anyone on here could give me any advice on what I should do to get accepted. I know it's a long way away, but I feel like the whole world is wanting me to fail sometimes, and I just can't. One of my biggest problems in school, is my stutter. I have horrible speech. And it isn't because I'm nervous or anything like that, it's just in me. I can't control it. The other day in my English class we had to do a play on the Miracle Worker and I just couldn't stop stuttering. I tried, and tried, but it wasn't enough. Anyway I know I'm getting off-topic. I'm not really sure where to put this, but all I know is I'm a regular kid with a passionate heart who wants to succeed.

Thanks

In regards to admission, you just need to do the very best you can in the toughest classes that you can handle. Taking a couple of honors courses is a great start. Next year, can you add an AP class to 2-3 honors(Human Geography)? Your Junior year, try to take 2 AP classes, (English Comp). Senior year take 2 AP as well.

Now, you can look at different websites to look at your chances.

Need above 3.75 gpa USUALLY, but around 45-50% of in state students are accepted.

Now, if you think that not getting into UNC-CH means you have failed, that is Baloney!

EVERY college in the UNC system will have its pluses and minuses and you CAN get into one of them, even if you need to go to South Piedmont first and get your AA. Not a big deal! to then go on to UNC Charlotte or wherever. I personally wish that I would have gone to a CC first and then to a 4 year school. My grades and attitude would have been better and not so bitter about the experience.

As for the last issue, are seeing a Speech Therapist for the stuttering?

If not, tell your parents that you NEED to see one that KNOWS what they are doing with stuttering. Ask to see/talk with those that they have helped!

Situations like that play will make almost ALL stutterers to do worse than normal.

Do not worry about others and how you sound, you will do fine.

If you ever need more advice, just ask!

UNC values applicants with a variety of EC’s that extend beyond the predictable newspaper, Model UN, Spanish Club, etc. Think about the organizations, activities and causes you commit your time and energy to-- and make sure they reflect your own
passions and concerns. Don’t load up on EC’s simply because you can. Be selective and
build a high school resume that shows prospective colleges what you’ll bring to their community.
UNC is a tremendously service minded school. The vast majority of students take at least one service-learning course during their four years, and the respected Buckley Public Service Scholars program requires students to fulfill 300 hours of service while at UNC.
Even in a big university like UNC, the applications are read with an eye toward more than numbers, awards and athletic achievement. Though I think it’s dangerous to set your heart on one school, especially in 9th grade, you can use this dream to focus your mind early and persistently on creating a high school experience that will give you a great jumping off point to college.

Keep your GPA high and study hard is all I can say! Goodluck and don’t sweat too much about it (;
