Hi, I was recently waitlisted at CMU (Mellon College of Science) and put my name on the priority wait list. I was wondering what I can do to help me get off the waitlist and accepted. I will send in the update form and I am visiting in mid-April, but what else will help? Should I get another LoR or have my guidance counselor make a call? Should I send in my third quarter grades (they are improved from my first semester grades)? Or should I do nothing but visit and send my update form? What will help? Thanks!

IF CMU is your absolute top choice you can 1) ask your guidance counselor to get in touch with the admissions officer to let him/her know it is your top choice and if accepted you will attend 2) send an email saying the same thing to the admissions officer. Let him/her know you will be visiting again in April and ask if you can meet him/her and interview while you are on campus. Also if you have any new information send it (third quarter grades and anything else you can think of that changed for the better since your application)and ask if there is anything you can do to strenghten your position on the waitlist 3) Once that is done, forget about CMU,focus on the schools you get into and pick the one that you feel is the best match. If you are waitlisted at CMU chances are you got into a number of great schools that you can be happy at.

Actually, an edit, 2 of my grades went up (History C–>B, Physics B–>A), but my French grade possibly dropped to a C from a B. Will that hurt a lot?

Bump!

Can you ask GC to do this for 2 colleges?

Your GC would not agree to do it for more than one school. D1’s GC asked her a few times as to which one was her top choice and if she would absolutely attend if admitted. I also followed up with an email to let them know we would financially support her if admitted.
Send in an updated packet with an essay, latest transcript, additional LORs. Start calling every so often after May 1 and pay attention to CC to find out which school is going to its WL. I found out Cornell was going to its WL from CC before my kid’s GC did. I had her call the same day and my kid was given an offer that afternoon.

When it comes to WL, adcoms want to get it over and done fast. They would prefer to offer it someone who they know would say yes right away than an unknown. It is something they need to do before going on their summer vacation. They would literally call students on their list until spots are filled.

So sending another LoR will help? On their website they said “there is no need to send addition Recommendations”? I am planning on writing an additional essay on why I want to attend, this weekend. And I will be talking to my GC Monday about him calling the school. Should I let them know I’m visiting in a few weeks?

Bumping!

some of you have mentioned to send additional recommendation letter, grades. Do you send that yourself in a packet or you ask GC to do it?

The one page letter saying how XYZ still remains your top choice and you would attend if admitted, would you e-mail or send it by mail? I would think paper copy may be better as e-mail can get lost etc.

Some GCs do not want to do the work. In that case, you can get the packet together and send it yourself. I would give it few more weeks. Adcoms are probably very busy taking angry phone calls from people. Call in a week or two then send the packet. What you want is to be fresh (in a good way) on adcoms’ mind if they should decide to go their WL.

I guess the adcom will generally make wait listing decisions only after May 1st when deadline to enroll has been expired. Is it better to send them packet after 2 weeks from now or towards the end of May?

I was waitlisted to four schools. Each one, however, does not give high prospects to students on the waitlist. I am waitlisted at Duke, Vanderbilt, Harvard, and Northwestern. To be honest, I love each school so much that I consider each my top choice (in other words, I would have a seriously hard time deciding between more than one acceptance from these schools). I want to seriously pursue all of these opportunities because I want to increase my likelihood into getting off at least one of the waitlists. I guess my main concern is, am I misguided in pursuing my spots on all four wait lists?

CMU said it is not necessary to send another LoR, should I still send one?

My kid was offered a spot second week of May from two schools. If you send in your packet end of May the game maybe over. A word of caution is that when it comes to WL, adcoms will take students who do not need FA first because more often than not they have allocated their FA to accepted students already. Therefore, if you can afford the school without FA, it would definitely be a hook.

CMU already gave me their projected FA package. It was basically nothing, Would that still help?
