I am currently a Junior and am thinking about applying ED to either Cornell, Hopkins, or CMU for engineering next year. My GPA and test scores are about average for the schools and my only really noteworthy EC is being a part of the rowing team (varsity as a sophomore and captain as a junior). What kind of volunteering or working should I do over the summer in order to make me stand out as an applicant?

well what do you want to major in? what do your classes focus around? for example:
if you’re into…
-languages, study abroad
-math, try a math enrichment program
-CS, work on some open source projects
-science, try shadowing/interning/researching

to keep with the rowing thing you could help teach a rowing course or something.

also maybe take a class or two at a local uni/CC?

If you’re doing engineering, I think your best bet would be getting an internship or research opportunity.

Will interning at a hospital or doing medical research be of any benefit for a mechanical engineering application? I can’t seem to find any opportunities in the STEM field.
