Hello, I am an international student beginning my freshman year at NE this fall.
I was admitted as an Undeclared student, and I previously requested a major change to International Business. I just got an e-mail stating that I cant change my major because some of my qualifications do not match the ones necessary for the IB program.
I really want to study Business, but now I feel terrible since I might not be able to study Business.
I was just wondering if any of you know what I could do in order to change my major to Business.
Also, I would like to know what exactly is the Undeclared major, because I thought this was for those who did not know what they wanted to major in.

Thank you in advance!

You can still study International Business but maybe not freshmen year however I’m sure after the first year, you can change majors. Honestly, it’s not a huge problem right now since most freshmens no matter what major you are take similar courses since there are the core classes that all freshmens need to take.

Two things you can do.

Find out what courses IB students take in their first year and make sure you register for as many of them as possible.

Send an email to the undergrad business dean and explain your situation. If you cannot change your major now, maybe you can transfer next year and you can ask what you should do now to make it easier to transfer next year.

When you go to orientation, you can also talk about it with your academic adviser. Your adviser should be able to explain what they mean by qualifications “do not match.” I could only think that this might be the language requirement, but not all the IB tracks require a foreign language.

Finally, remember that a large university has its own bureaucracy. Getting things done often requires talking to the right person. The saying, “where there is a will, there is a way” is not always true, but most of the time it is.

As to the person above who said freshmen year courses are all the same- it’s DEFINITELY not true, especially for business majors. Take an english major switching to biology, which seems like a pretty simple switch. Except bio majors take two chem classes, two bio classes, two calculus classes, and sometimes one or two major electives (if not, then core classes) their first year. So suddenly you’re six classes behind, and you might not finish on time. Get far enough back, and they won’t let you into the major.

I tried to switch into IB after my first semester, and they didn’t think I’d be able to do it because of how strict the IB schedule is. It’s even more severe than the regular business program.

Not trying to discourage you, but you need to be aware. Definitely don’t just relax for a while, assuming you’ll be able to apply next year and get in automatically. Keep on top of it and follow the advice in the previous post.
