It's my last summer before I start applying to colleges and I'm taking a summer course and plan on doing some volunteer work this summer. But what else can I do that will look impressive?

Do whatever interests you the most. There’s no point in trying to impress an admissions committee, since individual admissions committees differ, and the committees will differ within each school, so what might impress one reader may not be as impressive to someone else. You really need to look at yourself and find out what your interests are and pursue those interests to the best of your ability. I know that this is a very generic answer, but there is no one correct way to impress an admissions committee.

I see what you’re saying and I totally agree. I don’t want to do something I have no interest in just to receive good impressions.

But I don’t really know what my passions are yet. I just want to know what kind of opportunities are still out there for me to dedicate myself throughout the summer. Most internships have already close applications months ago, so I just want to know what opportunities are out there now

Forget the adcoms. Impress your parents with your maturity this summer. Show them you are responsible, and you’ll be ready for college. Cut the lawn, clean the garage or the basement. Wash their cars, clean your room, make them dinner. Don’t whine when they ask you to do something.

Treat them with respect, even if they still treat you like a little kid. Show them that you appreciate them. Do it this summer, because senior year can be filled with anxiety, anticipation, dread, sadness and happiness for all of you. It will be graduation before you know it. Enjoy this last year as a kid as you make strides in becoming an adult.

That was actually really good advice considering a course of events that happened today…I could have seen myself reacting negatively but I think you convinced me otherwise :)

Google the name of your city and volunteer, you’ll get websites that give volunteer positions in your town.
