I'm a computer science and economics dual major from a mediocre state college (UGA). I'm also thinking about minoring in Math. I've already taken calc 1-3, linear algebra, and diff eqs as both my majors have a basis in math (only calc 1 & 2 was required). A math minor would be 3 extra classes. I can't imagine tri majoring, though that would be impressive. My GPA is mediocre like my college, a 3.3. I'm a junior. I could push it up to a 3.5 realistically, but I'm probably not. I've never been the type to focus on school, I'd rather do the basic minimum to survive. I'd rather party than focus solely on school. I'm only going to be young once.

I've been looking at stats and what can I do forums. I think I'm screwed. I understand economics much more than computer science. I have yet to get an internship. I was planning on getting one next summer. I'd like to go to grad school, but my grades are mediocre. But then again, I'm hoping to just stay at UGA (mediocre) for my master's, so I may not really be screwed. I'm not particularly sure what I'd go to grad school for. Money is not an obstable; my parents will pay for masters in comp sci/econ/whatever. They'd probably even pay for a phD if I really wanted one (not for me). I'd like to be able to support myself one day and not live off my parents, but who knows?

I should add that I'm probably not the type of person who should actually get an IT job. I'm usually happy my program compiles correctly. The person next to me has finished the same project a week ago and is now making up a new project for his own amusement. I don't go to a college meant for Comp sci majors!! Why did they come here, I will never know. I will get fired immediately in the real world. I'm not really a math person. I just force myself to do it.

You are your own worst enemy problem. There is nothing wrong with UGA. As a matter of fact it is a very good school and I went to UF. Go ahead and party. You set yourself up for failure.

What you need to do is figure out what stokes your fire. If it isn’t CS, then get out. If it is econ, do it and put your mind to it. If they don’t do it, then find something.

You really need to stop feeling sorry for yourself.

Sorry, stellastar, I told you the bad, but gave no suggestions to deal with it. Go to the career center at school to help you find a career that will make you happy.

In regards to your econ major, you can do many jobs. Here is a link to some of them.

Also, there was much negativity in your post. Perhaps you could go to counseling to help you through some of it. My experience is too much partying is just masking an underlying unhappiness. I could be wrong, but it can’t hurt to sit down with someone.

You set yourself up for failure.

I know when to stop. Otherwise, I’d be a psych major with a 2.5 GPA ( no offense to psych majors with pre med, pre law, etc, or masters/pHd in mind…a plain psych degree is worth as much as the paper it’s on). I’m fairly certain that I’m not going to fail in life, I’m just not going to live to “my potential”. I pretty much decided that for myself when I went to UGA as opposed to any tier 1 school I got into. I guess I was hoping for job that combines econ and comp sci, so I can just skate by life (which is the final goal).

I went to a career councilor once at my school. He showed me something nearly identical to that. Meh, it lies. Some require other skills sets (the once with finance written into the title and accountant comes to mind). A lot of the others usually require higher education (economist…you’ll need a masters before you can actually call yourself one).

IT really does give a clear cut path. I’ll probably have to stick with that until I can find something better. meh.

well thanks for your help!

Well then, party on!
