What can I do with this degree?

I'm asking the adults because you have the most experience in the actual work field...

I'm a high school senior, and my college plans are to get a BS in Computer science with a concentration in software engineering, and a BS in Engineering Physics from the University of Michigan. I plan to go to grad school for nuclear engineering.

I know I'm still young and my plans will probably change, but does it make sense to get the BS in computer science? Coupled with the nuclear engineering degree, what kind of jobs would I fit well with?

Thanks

You will not complete your college education for another five to seven years (depending on whether you get a masters degree). By that time, jobs may exist that aren’t even on the radar screen now. If you like the subject matter and think you would like to do SOMETHING with that kind of information, then pursue that degree.

BS in CS makes you instantly employable.

My son is a senior in college, finishing a BS in computer science. He has chosen to go on to graduate school in the hope of earning a PhD in computer science, but most of his classmates have chosen to go straight into the job market. Many of them already have jobs lined up for after graduation in May, and it’s only November.

Just remember, trying to chase hot jobs is an invitation for disappointment. Do what excites you right now. You may find it leads to something great. And if it does not, our job market offers lots of flexibility. For example, I ask the other parents here how many are working in the job they trained for in college? How many were even employed in something close right after graduation?

Well, I’m interested in computers but I’m also interested in nuclear engineering. Since computer science seems to be a very marketable degree…it will give me something to rely on if I decide down the road not to go to grad school for nuclear engineering.

Thanks =)

Marian,
Did the CS majors get jobs in CS field, or what?

Bookworm, my senior son and a good friend both have lined up CS jobs in NYC.

Top CS majors from good schools very often have jobs with 70-80K starting salaries waiting for them right out of college.

Yes. These are soon-to-graduate seniors from the University of Maryland at College Park, which is our flagship state university and has a very good computer science program. These kids do not have to take jobs in other fields unless they happen to want to.
