What can I do with this?

Hey everyone,
I'm planning to go to the U of Northern Colorado next year and major in Business Administration with a Management emphasis. Is that smart? What can be done with that kind of degree? Am I setting up to be a CEO?

Personally, I am not a big fan of majoring in management as it is largely based on soft skills which can be acquired on the job (and you aren't going to be managing anything of great substance upon graduating anyways). If you attended a top school, my thoughts may be different but I would explore majors that give you tangible skills that are more difficult to pick up on the job (ie finance, accounting, or perhaps even CIS).

That being said, I would contact your career services and see if you can get employment breakdown for each individual major (ie avg salary, which companies hired them, and which positions they entered into).

You don't need to major in mgt to become a CEO and majoring in mgt does not necessarily mean you will one day become a CEO. It is good that you have a longterm goal, but when picking a major, you should be more concerned about the short term job prospects you will receive upon graduation.

Yeah, management majors have the worst placement rate. Save that "management major" for an MBA later on in life.

Thanks for the fast replies!

Well now I'm scared.

If I do an emphasis in Finance, is that basically only going to lead to being a CPA? The only other emphases at the school I'm most likely attending are Accounting, CIS, General Business, and Marketing.

So now that I see there is a Finance and Accounting emphasis, what is Finance? I feel like an idiot. "I want to got to Business school and I have no idea what anything is!" Awesome impression.

You can't become a CPA with a major in finance. You need to take at least 24 units of accounting courses. You can major in finance and take the required courses to become a CPA though.

I don't really know what finance is either...I've never taken a course in it. But I do know what CPAs do as I was going to become one at one time in my young, undecided life.

Look it up...

You will most likely take an intro business course which will give you an introduction to the various majors. However, if you want to learn about them now you could start by searching wikipedia.
