What Can I Still Do?

Hi, rising senior here. I applied to two academic summer science programs (HSHSP and PAN) and got rejected at both. I kind of foresaw that so my next plan was to shadow one of my uncles who are both engineers but I can't do that now because my mom thinks it's unfair to them (give me a break). Basically I just don't know what to do because all of the academic programs' app deadlines are way past. I don't really know what else to do anymore in my area of interest (science/engineering) besides take online courses. I just want to do something that will keep me busy and look good on apps.

Are online courses worth it? Has anyone had any experience with them?

Also, any other general advice for summer activity? I have a summer job and band camp in August... that's basically it right now.

Well, “shadowing” for more than a couple of days each would be an imposition on a working engineer, IMHO. So your mom is not wrong about that. It seems reasonable for a day or two, though. What about learning programming (or a new language if you already have some skills in that area)? You can teach yourself through books for the most part.
