<p>BA programs generally have larger humanities/social science/general studies requirements in their curricula than a comparable BFA program in the same subject. When you get a BA in a certain subject only about 1/3 of your credits have to be earned in that area of study (though it varies from school to school) Whereas with a BFA you might be required to do fulfill 2/3 of your overall credit requirements in one particular area of study. </p>
<p>If your daughter does a BA program in studio art it will simply mean that a higher proportion of her course load will be general education stuff/ liberal arts electives. It would help in applying to non art grad programs. Maybe she’d want to do history or critical studies or something of the sort afterward and in that instance its more helpful to have a BA. Also if she does decide to become a serious artist doing a lot of liberal arts stuff will help her develop a well informed practice. The only downfall would be that if she does decide to be a practicing artist she might find her self not quite as artistically developed as kids who spent their four years of college doing art and nothing else. She might also be at a competitive disadvantage if she wanted to apply to those big name MFA programs straight out of college.</p>
<p>edit* some LAC’s break up their curriculum into thirds in such a way that you are only required to spend one third of your credits on general ed, one third on your major and the other third is up to you. But that also varies from school to school and program to program.</p>
