I'm very interested in majoring in Political science/international affairs (some colleges I see they are the same and some colleges they are separate).

What are some great careers in the major? Is there a lot of traveling opportunities?
I'm not entirely knowledgeable of all the career options.

And would is be better to study this major at a liberal arts college vs. a public state college?

I have thought about that major also, which sounds like an interesting combination. I am researching these options also. Their are alot of government internships that involve college students that you could look into.

Lots. You can work for a private company like SAIC or Lockheed as an analyst; you can work at the State Department or another government area. You can work at an embassy, or get your law degree and then become a lobbyist. There are plenty of opportunities, especially in DC.

A LOT.
Political Science alone allows you to do most Government jobs, such as running for elected office. It also can merge with law school and give you jobs in any legal field. Every company needs analysts to tell them the legal boundaries for their operations.

International Relations is a strong one for both government and business jobs. The State Department employs tens of thousands to represent and run the US overseas, while businesses need people to know how to expand into new markets.

If you really wish to advance in either PoliSci or IR, you’re likey looking at at least a graduate degree. A BS is only needed for state dept Foreign Service Officer - although the exam is difficult, some Non-profits/NGO’s. USAID prefers master’s degrees.

Double majoring in both is somewhat redundant but could help with grad school and some courses will likely count for both degrees.

I’d recommend majoring in the ONE you’re really interested in and consider a minor in business or econ. The more foreign languages the better.

Focus on leadership skills/organizations and internships.

I’m majoring in international relations but I’m also doing pre med…with my degree I hope to work for the United Nations, which I why I plan on going to school in NYC, which is the home to the UN.
