Besides how pretty it is.

What type of student personality is present generally? A guidebook I read said white upper middle class preppy. True?

School spirit? Camraderie?

About an hour 1/2 from New Haven?

New London?

I hear there is a srtrong Engish Dept. ...true?

What kind of stats needed to be admitted?

Give me the inside scoop please if you are familiar with the school.

The campus is very pretty. It is definitely a preppy school. Half-hour sounds like a fair estimate, plus it's not too far from Hartford or Providence, either. Ferries leave from New London to Long Island and Block Island regularly during warmer weather. I personally like New London, but some don't. Mystic's amazing. The English department is strong, as is drama. You can get stats at http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=1382&profileId=6 and admissions factors at http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=1382&profileId=1.

I should amend that to say that while it is a preppy school, just like most LACs, it isn't a school that's hostile to those from lower socioeconomic classes. Its location helps with that, as does the fact that the college is doing a lot to boost minority enrollment and transfers from Connecticut community colleges.

I'm lower-middle class and was raised on generic food and thrift store shopping, and I don't have any problems with the college at all as a resident and native of eastern Connecticut. It's an amazing school. That's why I'm looking at transferring there. :)

I plan on visiting this week and look forward to seeing it. I welcome any thoughts of students/parents that have visited and either liked it or not. My S didn't want CT colleges but will look and may be surprised. I think though the real effect of a college like Conn. will be with the students around.
I liked what I read about the president, but he's stepping down this year, taking a year off, and then coming back to teach. I also liked how he didn't push some older racial incidents under the rug, and not only discussed them back in 2003, but still brings it up to showcase programs, etc. they put into place. That is unusual from what I hear on campus's, but he made references to bigotry he encountered as a child he never forgot. Coinsidently he grew up very close to me and we shared similar experiences with lack of tolerance. A lot of change since then.
