What cell phone service will you be using?

I currently use Verizon

and I am looking for a cheaper service to save me money while I am in NYC.

I am kinda looking for Sprint or T-Mobile, which have cheaper service than Verizon.

However, both Sprint and T-Mobile kind of sucks in Berkeley, CA (they all loose reception in Lawrance Lab)

So... what cell phone service will you be using?

And how are Sprint and T-Mobile in NYC?

well in nyc it doesnt really matter what service you have because you wont be able to hear the other person anyway :)

get tmobile. Lots of people have it so tmobile -> tmobile = free.

Go with Cingular or T-Mobile, Cingular is REALLY big around here and not only is it extremely economical compared to other companies, but the connection is great as well. T-Mobile is also inexpensive however I used to have it and the connection was not the best quality.

Any cell phone provider has great service in NYC. I have been in the city with AT&T, Sprint, and now Cingular and they all worked perfectly, so just go with the service you have/is best for you. Keep in mind that this isnt some school in a cornfield lol..

Also there are plenty of small boutiques in manhatten/brooklyn where you can probably get hooked up with any service with a nice phone for not too much cash.

living in tokyo, cellphone plans in the us really seems different. altough japan has generally more expensive plans with significantly less free minutes, the individual plans seems to be more expensive than family ones (all you need is just 9.99 per month..) i do not want to pay $40 just for myself, and i know that i am not going to use talkin 900+ min.
so what should i do?

i have a close family in TX with cingular and i think that i want to, i can just tell them to add a line. is that a beter choice than getting individual plans? do most ppl have family plans anyways? does it matter what cell phone area code you have? (like each city seems to have diff beginnig such as 972..)

i need some advice as a novice in us mobile phone system

I have cingular and I get great service in the Middle of Nowhere, CA. So I imagine Cingular's quite good. Good, but expensive.

ugh :@
but I'll have to keep my 510 area code until october....

cingular's not good. I have trouble getting reception even on the first floor lobby of Stern.

i almost always have service with verizon, but sometimes its hard to understand what people are saying. but its the only service ive had so i dont know how it related to others (plus it could just be me, from listening to headphones to loud :-D)

cingular- i lose service at home though lols.
but at other places, cingular is just fine =)

Cingular is awesome EVERYWHERE in NYC. I just got it a few months ago after having sprint for two years, I traveled to NYU a few times also.. Even in the most remote parts of staten island (where i live) i always have great reception. It also depends on the model of the phone

okie dudee from someone who has lived in nyc for entire life.. Im telling you, it doesn't matter what your provider is. Cingular is ok, but personally I like tmobile because 1) I have it 2) tons of people have tmobile so tmobile to tmobile calling is free. Tmobile has a crap load of free minutes (weekends free, night free, tmobile to tmobile free etc) and the service is not horrible. its not like hell-SHHH-i am goin-SHHHHHH..
There's going to be dead spots around the city everywhere.. sheet happens, you can't always be covered.

you'll be fine. just get whatever plan is cheapest or whatever service has the coolest phones :]
oh and the cellphone area code doesn't matter, although most people have 646 or 917, I know some people even have 718 (which is queens area code) and one of my friends has 347.

718 is a staten Island area code.

and i have 347 as my cell area code, it is also part of NYC

I am getting t-mobile!!!

Free Samsung Cell Phone!!!

If you're pretty sure you won't be using too many minutes, yeah, getting family to add a line is probably a good deal. Individual plans have the exact same service as family plans, but family plans usually mean you share a pool of minutes and might get free calls to family. Either is fine in terms of usage. Don't worry about the area code since most people will be using cell phones, so there won't be any difference in terms of cost if you have a national plan.
