Tell me what you think about these schools and whether or not I have a chance:
University of Maryland College Park
University of Maryland Baltimore County
Rutgers Camden
Rutgers New Brunswick
Purdue Engineering
Vanderbilt
Penn State Univ. Park
Case Western
Virginia Tech

and if you have any other suggestions plz feel free to add.

I think you have a good shot at University of Maryland at College Park and Baltimore County especially since you're instate. I'm don't know the other schools as well so I won't comment on them. It'll help if you're talented enough on your instrument to make it a hook. You'll probably want to take the SAT II, good scores on that will definitely help you. I think your test scores and ECs can help make up for your GPA, although if your school is really hard and/or with grade deflation then that could help. Just try for good essays and teachers recs and keep your grades up and there's a good chance for those schools at least.

You should have already heard from Maryland (College Park) and Tech. I heard a while back. Your GPA and test scores are low for all the majors you have chosen, but I think you might have a chance at UMD.

CWTech, I'm only a junior, I'm trying to figure out what chances I have for the coming fall when I do actually apply.

I heard that if I apply for some obscure major, I'll have a greater chance of getting into the school. And then I can just switch majors after I get in. Do any of you have any comments on this theory? does it really work?

Have you taken any practice SAT II exams yet? If not, pick up the Real SAT II book and take the math II and biology exams tonight or tomorrow night. If you don't score at least in the upper 600's, wait until fall to take the test or tests, and practice over the summer. If you do ok on one test tonight, you could do a bit of review and just take that on Saturday. Good SAT II's will help you at Case - poor ones will not.

Well, I got my SATII Bio score back today. Not exactly great but it will have to do. I got a 690 on it. I wish I could have just had those ten extra points... oh well, maybe next time.

Its summer now, so I'm starting to collect college apps and write my essays. Any other suggestions as to what I could apply to or do to help get an edge in admissions?

I just realized that everybody in my school has like 200+ community service hours. i have about 20 so im working this summer to try to get some more... is this going to have a major effect on admissions?

college applications approach! i need to finalize my list within a few weeks since im starting on my essays now. I am applying early action or priority if the school has it.

end of junior year, my weighted gpa went up .05 the unweighted stayed the same. (not great i know but its too late now)

and im retaking the SAT in october aiming for about 2050. I've gotten 2100 on the practice tests so hopefully it will go smoothly.

so far my final list consists of:
UMCP
UMBC
Case Western
Virginia Tech
Purdue
Vanderbilt

so, if you have any more suggestions plz add!!

SAT IIs are a must for colleges! Most of the big ones require 2 with the New SAT, 3 with the Old one.
If you want to be an engineer, you need to take a math SAT II, preferably IIC. At least you'll have a step up above the males applying to an engineering school because those schools are always skewed towards the males. I think the national average for females attending engineering school is like 18%.

As a reach, I would recommend JHU's Engineering School, but more in particular, after looking at your extracurriculars in music, I recommend that you try for a double degree program in music there, i.e. Bachelor of Music from Peabody Conservatory and B.S. from Whiting School of Engineering.

Your extracurriculars point in that direction and plus, you went to CTY!

How come you took off NYU from your final list? I know a great guy who lives in NYC! You might know him. ;)

Change of plans, my parents are insisting that I apply to JHU and Carnegie Mellon University. I'm also adding Boston University and Lehigh. The more I look at Carnegie, the more I like it but I have doubts about getting in. They require two SATIIs either science or math. I already have Biology done but I don't have a math SATII. I plan to apply for early decision to get a bit of an edge. The ED apps are due 11/15. If I take the SATII MathIIC on 11/5 and rush my scores to CMU, will they get there in time? I know that they are available by phone on 11/21. Some of my friends said that I can send in my application and then rush the SATII grade when it comes out. Is this true?

What I suggest you do is ED to JHU with my plan, then if you don't get into JHU (worst case scenario), you can always ED2 to CMU because they have that option and JHU doesn't.

Which branch of CMU particularly interests you? Personally, I plan on applying to Tepper School of Business RD.

But about the SAT II question, your best bet is to call the CMU admissions office and ask them personally.
