What "characterises" your prep school - ie the environment - is it intellectual, jocky, elitist, diverse, caring, international, "in a bubble", supportive, makes u feel left out with no support, approachable faculty, tight-knit community etc?

Apparently, Choate is a party school, which I don’t agree with. Other than that, I don’t think it really has a stereotype (for me, personally, at least). It’s pretty well-rounded.

^ Keep in mind, though, that these are only stereotypes, and every person has an unique experience at their respective school. They’re by no means the whole truth, but they do provide a pretty basic picture of the schools.

Plus, its really funny. :D

I do not necessarily agree with these, this is just what I gather from what other people/general knowledge, so don’t credit me for this:
Andover: top school tied with Exeter, fun and athletic but rigorous, diverse
Exeter: top school tied with Andover, more nerdy, stressful, still diverse
Hotchkiss/St. Paul’s/Deerfield: very typical New England- extremely preppy- looks like the kids "stepped out of a JCrew catalogue-, more of party schools, but still great academically
Choate: great academically, sort of preppy, possibly more of a party school
Groton/Middlesex/Loomis: lesser-tier schools as far as prestige, maybe not as difficult academically, but still highly regarded- Loomis is the only school in the Ten Schools Organization (Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, St. Paul’s Choate…etc.)
Milton: never has been regarded as anywhere near the top, but lately seems to be gaining popularity and prestige

Again, I by no means agree with this.

Middlesex and Groton are NOT lesser tiers!!!

en espa

How do you do that?

I agree with Izzy Busy Bee…

boarder56, I’m not sure what facts “other people” are using to describe MX and Groton as lesser tier. When looking at selectivity, average SAT scores and college matriculation, Groton and MX would be in top tier.

And The Ten School Admission doesn’t necessarily measure “top tier”…

Oh. Sad. I was hoping I’d learn how to do it. I have a LG VX8350, so going online is a waste of time.

i was on my dad’s mac, so if you press the “alt” key and a letter it makes a little symbol!

Oh… Now I’m even more sad since I’m on an HP.

same. I’m on a really crappy old Dell that’s missing a “w”

Deerfield–
7 sit-down meals a week (very good food)
Preppiest school I visited (much preppier than Hotchkiss or SPS)
Very Athletic
The Most Amazing Science Center Ever!
Really tight-knit community

Boarder56-
Just to clear a few things up:)
Milton is actually quite a great school, with college matriculation stats wayyy up there. Milton has always been considered a good school, but I think it is gaining more recognition now. Choate is one of the least-preppy top-tier schools out there. It is in fact really laid-back and lenient as far as dress code, which I love.

Boarder 56,

I agree with Karenasaurus that Milton is a great school… very intellectual and progressive and with an amazing college matriculation record. Milton, Groton and Middlesex are way better than some of the schools belonging to the " Ten Schools". Not every school from the " Ten Schools" is top tier. In fact, some of them are not that well known.

Boarder56, you seem not to know much about these schools.

Groton by any means is NOT a “lesser-tier” school. (Just because it’s smaller? Please). Along with SPS and Middlesex (thus the term St. Grottlesex) it has long time been well recognized by the people who go to boarding schools. It is one of the more rigorous school among all you mentioned with probably the strictest graduation requirements and busiest day-to-day schedule. Groton kids do fantastically well in terms of college matriculation, certainly up there w/ Andover & Exeter.

I can say with confidence that the only schools among mentioned that matches Groton academically are: Andover, Exeter, SPS, Milton, Dfield, and maybe Choate.

I’d also like to add that Groton has its share of super preppy kids, a good half of students coming from wealthy MA towns, NYC, and Fairfield County in CT (Greenwich and such).

HADES/Groton/Middlesex/Milton etc is to Thacher/Cate as HYP/MIT is to Stanford/Claremont Mc Kenna etc.

If you’re looking for schools with superb academics, college matriculation, tight knit community benefits, superb and caring faculty, and a rich tradition of integrating the lessons of the outdoors into the curriculum, then consider the West Coast. Oh yeah, there is also the Southern California climate…not too shabby.

Well said, ThacherParent.

thatcher parent, what does CdeP stand for?

The school was built on the Casa de Piedra ranch. Casa de Piedra is the name of one of the dormitories, and an affectionate name for the school itself (much as “Old Nassau” is for Princeton University). Thacher alumni use the abbreviation CdeP to refer to the school, as in “John Smith, CdeP 1980” rather than “John Smith, Thacher class of 1980.”
