I'm finished AP chem and aced it (97). I love chemistry. The only science I have left to take is Physics C, so I'm wondering what my chemistry options for senior year are? What would be the rigorous college level equivalent of the course following ap chem that I can take at the local community college?

Does your school offer organic chemistry or AICE Chemistry? I would not recommend community college level chemistry courses if you’re planning on majoring in something with a relation to chemistry.

@sally47 I have no idea, I’ll have to talk to my counselor. The only nearby college is the community college, the nearest university is 45 min away. I really want to challenge my self, and I do plan on majoring in chem or physics.

@nambugold Good idea. If possible, stick to high-level courses in your current school. If you’re planning on majoring in one of the sciences mentioned, “better” colleges wouldn’t necessarily like to see you taking such vital classes in a subpar college. I believe what is preferred in reference to seeing community college classes on applications are the elective courses. Chemistry classes in competitive universities are more rigorous in nature and help build the foundation for your future courses.
Just my outlook on it.

@sally47 Guess I could just buy a college chem textbook for the fun of it, can’t hurt. I did that with physics, although a lot of the math for 4th year quantum mechanics went over my head.

Organic chemistry is usually taken after general chemistry (which is where the AP level is at). The other classes that a chemistry major usually takes have prerequisites that you probably haven’t completed (and they probably wouldn’t be offered by the community college anyway).

It’s not necessary to actually enroll in an organic chemistry class to learn the subject - there are a vast number of videos and resources online that will thoroughly cover just about anything you’ll encounter in such a class. For example, my university has basically uploaded their entire chemistry curriculum onto youtube.

Have fun (and make sure you do problems if you want to continue on)!
