I am wondering what math class most people take before taking AP Calculus AB/BC. This question came to mind because right now I'm a Sophomore in precalculus. During my freshman year, I took Algebra 2 with trigonometry along with honors geometry. And my Sophomore precalculus class seems to be EXACTLY the same thing as the Algebra 2 with trig I took last year! In fact, you could even say it's easier in many aspects. I'm basically going to spend the whole year revising Algebra 2 with trig and only learn a couple of new concepts at most, if any at all. So I'm thinking of dropping my precalculus class and taking AP Calculus for my Sophomore year instead. But would I be able to handle it straight out of Algebra 2 with trig? But then again, my precalculus class isn't really anything new from Algebra 2. So, what should I do?
Anyway, everyone share what math classes you took before starting AP Calculus!

alg3/trigonometry honors

it’s basically precalc

Pre-Calculus is essentially Algebra II and Trigonometry review, lol.

I took Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus as a Junior, currently taking AP Calculus (AB) as a senior… lol Calculus is Algebra II on steroids.

Is precalculus really that similar to Algebra 2 with trig in most schools?

I took precalculus freshman year and I’m now taking Calculus AB/BC as a sophomore.
I can’t really remember what I learned in algebra 2 since that was in 8th grade, but my calc teacher said that having a good precalculus foundation is important. So far, calc hasn’t been about logs or anything, but there is a fair amount of trig, like recognizing trig identities and such.

Last year I took Precalc . It was basically algebra 2 / trig with a few new stuff like polar coordinates, vectors, and limits. I found the review helpful though, since I had a terrible Algebra 2 Trig teacher.
This year I’m taking AP Calculus BC

Honors precalc is a good idea

I took honors precalc/trig

I’m taking Honors Pre-Calculus which is a lot harder than Algebra 2 so far (mostly because the teacher is a lot tougher) but I’m taking AP Calculus (AB) next year.

I took pre-calculus, in which the new topics didn’t really appear until multi-variable calculus, differential equations, linear or abstract algebra, or other advanced classes.

I took Algebra II in 10th grade, tested out of pre-calculus at the end of 10th grade, tested out of non-AP calculus at the beginning of 11th grade, and then self-studied the rest of Calculus BC by the end of junior year.
Trigonometry, logarithms, parametric equations, polar coordinates, conic sections, sequences and series, etc. all show up in calculus, but except for the first two you won’t really see any of them until the end of Calculus BC.

you can test out of classes? ugh I wish we could do that here. saves so much money and time.

I took precalc honors last year and now I’m in AP Calculus BC.

No one at my school can skip precalculus because there’s no trig with Algebra 2. It’s part of the precalc class.

I took Algebra II as a freshman, then Functions of Trigonometry as a sophomore, and AP Calc AB as a junior [which was the highest track available].

Precalculus is a lot of Algebra II review, but there are quite a few things covered in pre-calc that aren’t covered in Algebra II. As such, it’s not the best idea to skip it. It’s a lot of boring review now, but it’s only September. You’ll get into non-review stuff eventually. Not to mention the fact that it’s probably too late to switch into AP Calc - they’ve covered a month or more worth of stuff at this point. It might have been feasible if you decided during the summer or first week or so, but it’d be pretty difficult to catch up at this point.

when i took alg3/trig honors, which was after alg2 honors, we covered topics from alg2, but way more in depth. and then the second half of the year, we learned trig. i’m not sure if a typical alg2 class is enough before calculus. precalc is more than just trig.

I took Honors Trigonometry/College Algebra before calculus.

The way my school district works is that you can take algebra 1 in 8th grade, honors geometry freshman year, honors algebra 2 sophomore year, honors precalc junior year, and ap calculus senior year (ab/bc depending on your precalc grade)
