What classes should I take as sophomore transfer at Emory University?

I’m transferring from NYU to Emory University’s College of Arts and Sciences, and there are so many GER’s and major requirements, so many classes full, I don’t even know where to start! What do sophomore schedules typically look like? What do I want to get out of the way now, and what kinds of classes should I wait to take until later?

Credits I have that (most likely) fulfill GER’s are AP scores of 4 in music theory and environmental science, a 4th-semester language class, computer programming, 2 semesters of writing, philosophy, intro to sociology, and music electives (I don’t know what these will fulfill, but apparently Emory will take those for something). I’m planning on majoring in sociology and they have a suggested order of classes on the major website, but since I’m a transfer I have to delay those a bit. Any suggestions or examples of your schedules are much appreciated!

@22transfer : I have this feeling that many of the sociology courses will fulfill lots of gen. eds (namely the HSCs: http://catalog.college.emory.edu/academic/ger/hsc.php). Just saying. For example, there should be several CWR courses offered by the sociology department that, so that would fullfill those: http://sociology.emory.edu/home/undergraduate/major-minor/major-requirements-new.html

2/3 of the CWRs will be fullfilled by sociology courses that you MUST take. That leaves the HAPs, PE, Science, and language requirements. As a sophomore, you have plenty of time to complete and should honestly explore within the bounds of the requirements. I can’t tell what schedule I would recommend, but I wouldn’t worry so much. I did 2 STEM majors (and boy do STEM majors love complaining about how GERs inhibit their progress/constrain them…well that is usually a bunch of you know what), and was able to complete more than the required amount of courses for each gen. ed (except PE, where I was on par). You must also take QTM 100 (or the Soc. stats/research course) and it knocks out the math requirement.

Either way, don’t sweat it or feel burdened by these. Social science and humanities majors fulfill these requirements quite easily, because the gen. ed requirements are dominated by them. Just try to enjoy your academic experience, but maybe keep up with how many in each category you’ve fulfilled (the HSC and HAP categories can get weird for example). Note that it is possible than your ENVS can kill one STEM requirement, but you may need to find a STEM course with a lab. Astronomy and bio 120 are very popular options.

I didn’t realize GERs could overlap with my major classes, thank you very much @bernie12 ! Now I just have to hope that some of the classes I want have open spots lol
