what classes should i take in the summer as a freshman? do they tell us?

hey guyz,

I'm starting my summer session at berkeley for the verry first time after high school. I've taken several liberal arts courses in community college, from art history to calculus 2. Does someone advise us and help us choose what classes we need that will fulfill our major? or do we just take whatever we desire? i was thinking a science and elective class..

Normally the advice would come during CalSO and even the self-service L&S tutorial won’t be ready until later in May. Here is a planning worksheet from the CalSO site http://services.housing.berkeley.edu/NSS/Content/worksheet.pdf</a> but the key is to first understand the requirements for UC, Cal, L&S and your presumed major(s), then figure out what makes sense to take in summer.

I wouldn’t take any of the breadths or anything that is specified as “has to be taken at UCB” since you are officially not a student until Fall 2010, even though you are entering the special discounted summer class program. You should focus on classes that are fully transferable.

Look at the web sites of the major(s) you are considering - usually a name like math.berkeley.edu, biology.berkeley.edu etc but you can find them from the L&S advising site http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu

Finally, once you think you have the plan, feel free to ask here for advice or to double check any requirements

oh wow thanx! what do u mean ur not an official student till fall 2010? so if i decide to transfer, then it wouldnt count as 1 semester (since i need 2 semesters to transfer?)

correct. Summer isn’t counted as a semester in many conditions - as for example the limit of 9 semesters for graduation which does not include summer sessions in that count.
