I received these updates on bearfacts today regarding my registration today.

Phase I Your appointment will be assigned by CalSO

Phase II
Start: Thursday 07/26/07 02:20 PM (are many classes full by this time?)
End: Friday 07/27/07 02:20 PM

I am an intended BioEngineering major and wondering what classes to take and when I should sign up for them. Another question, what do I do about classes that I may be able to AP out of such as Math 1B. Do i sign up for the next course?

Don't take Math 1B if you have can AP out. Math 53 almost has nothing that is taught in 1B, which is a huge weeder class and full of pre-meds.

I just realized that I will probably find out my AP scores by then which is good but then that means that I won't be signing up for classes such as Math because of AP Calculus.

Any suggestions on what I should sign up for during Phase I? I am most likely going to take the pre-med path as well

Oh, you're pre-med. Then you pretty much take Math 1A & 1B regardless of your AP score.

Are there any other classes that I should take regardless of my ability to AP out? chem? bio?

(i misspelled choose. how embarassing)

Actually, I disagree. If you were admitted under bioengineering and you are fairly sure that you will stay in the major, you could just skip Math 1A and go to Math 1B. For most pre-meds I would say "take Math 1A and Math 1B because if you skip Math 1A then you have to take Math 1B and Math 53 and you probably don't want to take Math 53". However, for BioE you have to take Math 53 anyway. I think med schools require 2 semesters of calculus. Look up the required classes for the med schools you are interested in. If they only require 2 semester of math then it's okay to skip over Math 1B and take Math 53 and Math 54.

The good thing about taking Math 1A is that you'll have it easier your first semester, which is always a good thing. The bad thing is you might have trouble finishing pre-reqs because BioE has so many of them.

As for Chem and Bio, you don't want to AP out of those because med schools want to see you take them. For example, you can AP out of Bio 1A and Bio 1B with a 5 on the AP Bio test, but med schools tend to want to see 2 semesters of lower-div bio classes, so you can't really skip out of them.

For your first semester I recommend taking Math 1A/1B/53, Chem 1A, another science course of your choice (if you want to), and a humanities. Here's a sample curriculum for BioEs interested in pre-med:
