What classes to sign up for and how class scheduling works?

I'm really confused with how class scheduling is going to work. I put down a certain major but I'm not completely sure that it is what I want to pursue for the next four years of my life and get a degree for. I don't want to sign up for classes that relate to that major and then later change majors and realize I wasted money taking those previous classes.

I know an advisor helps us sign up for classes, but what classes are we supposed to take? Do we just pick any classes that fit the GE requirements? I'm so lost.

By the way, I'm a CAS student. And I put down International Relations when I applied and got accepted into the school. But I later realized its an honors major and I have to physically apply for the major in my sophmore year. What does that make me then? 0__o

Titan, Look for CAS MAP requirements. Familiarize yourself with them. I had provided the link here in this forum, as well as others. Otherwise, google NYU CAS MAP requirements.

Then look at courses you have to take to be considered for IR Honors program. Yes, you apply for that sophomore year, but you need to start taking certain required classes freshman year. This will already fill up some spots in your schedule freshman year.

I have to run and attend to some personal matters, so will check back later to discuss details with you.

Link to CAS IR major prerequisites and requirements: (You must take classes in 1) International Politics and 2) Economics I or II, 3) have GPA of 3.65 for first year at NYU,
4) do relevant work, summer job or research paper in IR to show your commitment.)

As to the CAS MAP requirements, you should take Writing the Essay, Text & Ideas during the freshman year. Cultures & Contexts, Societies and Social Sciences, Expressive Culture during freshman or sophomore year. You also have two semesters of science and one semester of quantitative reasoning, as well as a foreign language requirement through the intermediate level (2 years of a foreign language). UNLESS you have AP credits or college credits that exempt you from the science ( for non-science majors), quantitative reasoning and foreign language requirements.

You can work around these requirements as listed and you should have a fairly good idea of what you need to register for. You should also save questions and issues to discuss with your advisor.
