Alright, so im a rising junior starting to think about college. I am a maryland resiedent. my UW is a 3.5 and my weighted is around a 4.0. I will take at least 3 to 4 AP's by the time I graduate. I am a 3 sport athlete and will possess 7 varsity letters and two years captain on the varsity wrestling team. I want to go to a mid to large college no farther west than tennesse and no farther north than mass. The states i am mostly considering is MD, PA, VA, OH, MASS, NJ, NY, NC, SC, GA, and FLA. I know it is a broad list but bear with me. Im thinking of buisness or law.

What exactly is your question? MY question is - can your family afford the out of state tuition?

I think he wants to know what college will fit.

That’s nearly impossible to answer. Have you done any research? Big or small school? D1 athletics? EC’s? Money situation? Etc.

“What college fits?”

But he’s not provided any information that would enable us to differentiate between these schools. Based on what he’s said so far, they all fit.

What are your SAT/ACT scores?
What is your rank in class? Other ECs besides sports?

What’s your budget?
Can your family afford up to $60K/year for private schools or $35K-$50K for out-of-state public schools? If not, can your family cover the “Expected Family Contribution” (without borrowing more than about $7500/year)?

What’s your intended major?
Do you care about the geographic setting (urban/suburban/rural)?
Do you want a big D1 sports / Greek scene?
Are you looking for a “party school”, a school with a serious intellectual atmosphere, or something in between?

There are over 3000 colleges and universities out there (including perhaps hundreds of mid-large-sized schools in your geographic area). Based only on location, size, cost, and your grades, start with the University of Maryland at College Park. The average weighted GPA of students admitted to UMCP for 2012 was 4.11, so yours might be a little low (depending on how they calculate it).

Also, since you’re a 3-sport varsity athlete - will you be a recruited athlete? That college search process is quite different. The CC Athletic Recruits forum here [Athletic Recruits - College Confidential](Athletic Recruits - College Confidential Forums) is a great resource.
