Drew, in Madison, NJ, would definitely be a safety for you (you would probably get a terrific merit award), and has a lot of the characteristics you seek. Its Presbyterian heritage keeps it from being a big partying destination, and kids can always get on a train into NYC for adventure. The NJ Shakespeare Theatre is on campus, and it’s a local treasure. Madison is a nice, walkable town.
