He has excellent ACT scores and excellent HS course rigor. What is his intended major, some kind of Engineering? His GPA is on target but the top UC’s will be a tough admit. Make sure he really focuses on his essays. He should many options next spring.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%
Best of luck to him.
Look at WUE rates then if affordable use WUE (Western exchange/scholarship) to apply to Montana State and Colorado State for possibly affordable safeties.
Add strong schools in the Midwest where he’ll be URM - UMinnesota Twin Cities (excellent college of engineering).
Apply to the Honors college at all.
Add cal poly slo?
Depending on your budget, run the NPC on Union, Bucknell, Lafayette (matches)? Olin, Cornell, HarvwyMudd for reaches?
I would recommend showing your son this site and having him take a look at it rather than have you, the parent do it. He is 17, it’s time he also starts to ask these questions.
@Gumbymom , If he change to major math, the chance with be higher?
Math majors are usually in the College of Letters and Sciences, so it could be an easier admit vs. Engineering at the top schools.
For Engineering, most UC’s admit by major.
UCSD for example admits into the University first and then into the major so it is possible to be admitted into UCSD but not into your 1st choice major. Engineering and Math/CS are capped majors at UCSD so he should apply but select a non-capped major as an alternate.
For UCLA/UCB, Math is in the College of L&S, so major is not really considered but for Engineering, his major will be considered.
He is a very competitive and qualified applicant but there are no guarantees but definitely worth his time applying to his top choices. Other than UCLA/UCB which are always tough admits, the rest of the UC’s are definitely within his reach.
He likes UCB very much, so if he couldn’t get in UCB, can he goes to community college, and transfer to UCB later on , it that good choice?
@HelenLiu199: Going the CC route and transferring to UCB is a good option, but there are so many other schools besides UCB where he could excel. I really do not think it should be a choice between just UCB or then a community college.
Make sure you visit as many schools as possible so he has many choices in the Spring.
