I am a junior in North Carolina. After college I would love to join a philanthropic organization, travel, and make a big difference in the world. A college around NYC or Boston has always been a dream for me. I plan to major in economics or marketing or sociology. Any suggestions?

It's not about the prestige of the school for me, it's about the job opportunities I will have in the area I want to pursue. Thanks for your help.

As any automatically generated list, it is only as good as the information you provide, and should be nothing more than a starting point for your research.

Your grades are good, you have plenty of BS ECs to satisfy adcoms, work on the standardized tests, ACT is low for many of the better colleges in the Boston and NYC area.

Would you consider a Christian liberal arts college? Covenant College is a reformed PCA college on Lookout Mountain in GA, but we are really big on making a difference in the world. We have really great community development majors and we emphasize making a difference wherever you are. Well, if you’re interested, here’s a link:

Covenant is really challenging achademically, but judging by your grades and the courses you’ve taken, that wouldn’t be an issue for you. We have a lot of international students who attend here as well, opening up opportunities to get to know more worldviews and experience different cultures.

It is not in Boston or New York, but Tulane is really pushing community service, and always did I believe. They also give great merit scholarships.

While not in the Northeast, Wisconsin has the #1 Sociology department in the US and has produced more Peace Corps and Teach for America volunteers than just about any other school.

I don’t know if UChicago and Tufts are in your reach unless you bring your ACT up. You need at least a 30 to be competitive. Have you tried the SAT?

Does anbody know anything about The Clarkson School? It is a bridging year for high school seniors who want to forgo their senior year and begin college at Clarkson University. While there, they apply to other universities where they will continue their education after they complete the program. I have seriously thought about attending and was wondering if anybody has attended or can provide me with any information about it.

Humboldt State University in California (up in the redwoods) has exactly what you’re looking for. They also hold the title for the most students per capita who join the Peace Corps.

Might want to look at Holy Cross-very good LAC-1 hour from Boston. Holy Cross offers many oportunities for working with non-profits and has strong alumni network in both Boston and New York. HC is also SAT optional.
