what college would be good for my son

Community college credit acceptance at private colleges depends on the college. But since elite private colleges like Stanford and Columbia do accept some* junior transfers from community colleges, it is not necessarily the case that community college credits will not be accepted. However, it is not really knowable for certain until one gets the credits individually evaluated, which is usually not done until after matriculation (although some private colleges like USC do have premade course articulation lists like state universities typically do).

Duke’s transfer credit policy is here; it does not mention refusal of credit from community colleges:
[Duke University | Trinity College of Arts & Sciences : Transfer courses and credit](http://trinity.duke.edu/advising/transfer-students/transfer-courses-and-credit)

%ucbalumnus- These elite private universities have not agreed to the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between NC community colleges and colleges/universities in the state. I agree that you should ask about this before applying to clarify, but it is a REALLY long shot that they would take community college credits.
