What state do you live in? What is your financial situation – some idea of family income and how much your parents have said they will contribute to your education? Have you visited any colleges yet? Any preference for size of college or whether it should be urban/rural/etc.?

I live in Texas. avg income is 50,000. 6 people live in household. parents can’t contribute. Haven’t visited any. Doesnt necessarily matter where. I would prefer public scho since they at cheaper than private but Ill consider both.

you’re more likely to get a lot of aid from a private college than you are to get affordable low costs from a non-Texas public. Your family income might position you for a lot of what’s called need-based aid, and it is the private schools (outside of TX) that offer more need-based aid. the only way to find out how much is to run the net price calculator found on each school’s Financial Aid page. It can be a pain to do the first time, but it will fairly accurately tell you what each school will offer you in need-based aid and what your Expected Family Contribution will likely be.

Try the npc’s at a Texas public, Berry, Depauw, and Ohio Wesleyan for starters. They will give you some idea of how much money you will need to provide each year toward your costs.
