Which college are you applying to?

I am doing mechanical engineering for most UCs except UCLA and Berkeley which will probably College of Letters of Science for either Physics or Economics. I will be applying to all UCs. I don’t know what majors to pick for UCLA because I really want to get in…

Im throwing a long shot at Stanford too because Im very interested in their product design major, it seems like the perfect major for me

List a few of your most important ECs (a laundry list of 20+ items is not needed)

  • Varsity Tennis
  • National Honor Society
  • Key Club President/ Division Spirit Coordinator
  • Junior Aeronautical Club
  • 150+ Hours of Community Service
  • Photographer/Videographer
  • Dance/ Hip Hop

Any other significant accomplishments in a specific field

  • I was a California Boys State Delegate
  • Rank 14 (school has a lot of 11-15 AP takers lol) I have two Bs
    • I don’t have much…
  • I got the top 9% letter, and my parents keep saying I will be guaranteed somewhere in the UC system? Is that true? THey said they heard it when they went to the event.

How am I looking?

I think you are a competitive applicant for all the UC’s. Test scores could be higher for a better chance at UCLA/UCB since these are always a tough admit but you should be able to get several acceptances within the UC system.

If you are ELC eligible (top 9%) you are guaranteed admission to a UC (not of your choice) which has been usually UC Merced.

For UCLA, you have to decide what is your priority: Major in Engineering or go to UCLA as another major possibly. You need to find out how difficult it would be to change your major if you decide to apply other than Engineering. This is from the UCLA FAQ:

A: Changing majors within the College of Letters and Science is usually not a problem. Talk to a counselor when you attend New Student Orientation, or visit the College when you begin to attend classes.

Changing from or to a major in one of the other colleges (Arts, Engineering, Theater/Film/Television) is more difficult as these programs have specific admission requirements. Contact the department once you enroll at UCLA.

From another poster current EE major at UCLA:
UCLA admits engineers directly to the major so all spots are taken. You can only apply in when spots open up and that requires you to take the engineering plus your regular major courseload be get a near 4.0 GPA because of only a handful of spots.

Thank you for replying! I think I will go with undeclared physical sciences, most likely into physics.
