I heard that some colleges send out Likely Letters to applicants before offical decisions. Is that true? What colleges will do that?

stanford and yale for sure, cuz i got them :)

U.Va and Duke also

Dartmouth, Amherst, williams (early write letter)

has stanford sent out like letters for RD yet?

probably UCLa for the engineering department.

does jhu send them out too?

bruno- u can check on jhu forum

where's the jhu forum?

on cc top universities forum

Yes, Stanford has sent them.

WPI also, I received one :)

In addition to the above, Cornell

add UNC-CH to that too

zagat and mcortex88...maybe you can tell me when the likely letters for stanford were sent out and what they said because I am 100% sure that Stanford does not send out likelies

Dartmouth is pretty open about their likely letter policy.

What are his/her chances if one didn't get likely letters? Is it impossible for him/her to get into the specific college?

Oh snap. Yale sends out early letters? That's my first choice and I've been sweating blood in anticipation and have seen hide nor hair of any correspondence from them since the "your application is complete" postcard. Crap. So that I might live vicariously through you, what did your Yale likely letter say?
And ditto on UVA's likely letter. I got it the other day. And apparently, William and Mary say "to hell with likely letters we're just going to send the admissions decisions", because I just got their acceptance letter today.

in regards to amherst, i was invited about a week or two ago by admissions to take part of their telementoring program to be guided by amherst students with financial aid/admissions decisions. do you think that constitutes a likely letter of sorts. like, why would they waste their time assigning me an amherst student to help me "make decisions" if they didnt want that student to be saying "trust me, choose amherst"?

Those who said Stanford sends out likely letters are incorrect (with the obvious exception being for athletes).
