What Colleges should I apply to (Int'l)

I am an international(asian) and I am very confused in which schools to apply.

My priority is financial aid (almost full) and I want to major in engineering.

I have a huge financial limitation (sat I fee is my school's monthly fee).
I also have limitation of applying to maybe 6 colleges.
Can I get into any ivies? Should I even apply? Which colleges will be apt for me?

First you need to say what country, and don’t say predicted for the ACT i thought I would get 34 I got 29. Furthermore your ECs do not reflect your passion for math, science, or technology. Maybe Berkely, still apply to other schools and do apply to safeties, I don’t know your exact situation so ya…

I almost closed this because Chance Threads should be in the Chances Forum, but it’s really a request for colleges so I edited the thread title.

That being said, OP go to the International Thread available on the main page.

“yet to appear, confident of more than 2200”

This is the issue. Take the test first. You can’t just assume you will score above 2200 – a lot of people assume this and don’t get the score and everything falls apart.

Sorry, but your Coursera courses will not really help you. Colleges will appreciate your enthusiasm for self-directed learning but without some sort of test scores, they cannot give much weight to them.

Your ECs are very lacking. International students from India usually have much better ECs.

By restricting yourself to engineering and by having such great financial need, you will probably not have many schools to apply to, let alone get into one. International admissions with aid is fiercely competitive, not just at Harvard and Yale, but even at schools like Lafayette (which has engineering, btw), of which you may have never heard. The odds are usually 10% or lower.

Good luck!

PS You don’t need to limit yourself to 6 colleges. Most schools that offer fin aid to internationals have fee waivers. You don’t need to pay to send SAT scores – just have your counsellor upload your scores with your transcript.

I recall reading a thread by an int’l student from india who received generous aid from WPI.

@‌International95

You can do this? :o

There is a lot of concern about fraud, for int’l applications.

I would be very surprised if selective colleges would accept test scores that were not directly sent by the testing organization, ESPECIALLY if the college was considering granting aid money. I would also be surprised to learn of selective colleges giving fee waivers to int’l applicants.

Only way to know for sure is to contact each schools directly and ask them. Don’t assume all schools have the same policies.

Ughhhh even more things to double check. Why can’t you people ever let me revel in my naïveté for just a while?

Uh,because we don’t want you coming back complaining that you can’t afford your school…

Well, it depends on your school as well. Colleges trust my high school so they had no problem accepting test scores from my GC. Alternatively you could have your local USEF send the scores for you.

@International95‌ How often do colleges give fee waivers to international students? Is it mostly an LAC thing?

My school has a registered American program but rarely sends its kids to the states, so I’m not sure how reputable it would be. What is USEF?

Also, is it possible to tell that college that if they want the official school report, they can ask for it?

Most colleges that offer aid to internationals offer fee waivers as well. UChicago, Yale, Stanford etc all do, but you need to have your GC submit the fee waiver form on CommonApp. If your school has a CEEB code, it should be fine to just ask your GC to upload your test scores.

Google ‘USEF’.

I did. I don’t ride horses.

YESSSSS MY SCHOOL DOES HAVE A CEEB CODE. REPRESENT SON I AIN’T GIVIN’ THE COLEGEBOARD ANOTHA PENNY
^:)^ :ar! B-)

^ I’m very sorry about that. Preventing potential money from going to the Collegeboard just does things to me. It makes me happy.

I’d love to hear you say that in an Indian accent.

United States Education Foundation?

Oh ok, I only managed to find some information about the United States Equestrian Federation. Anyway, thanks for the advice, I don’t know what I would do without you

<<<
Maybe Berkely>>>

No…Berkeley is a public…it doesnt give aid (or much aid) to intls.

If full or near-full aid is needed, then none of the publics will work, unless it is an unknown school with some kind of assured full ride…but even that wouldnt be a true full ride for an intl who must show funds for insurance, travel, and personal expenses…about $7k+

Thanks everyone for your advice. I will surely increase no. of colleges i apply to. None of my details are fraudulent. I live in a small town of india. We don’t have any counsellor and my school believes more in studies than ECs. But i am working on that. Also, there isn’t any USEF office in my city, but i will try to contact them. Sorry for wrong title and section. I won’t be taking ACT. I had a hard time convincing my parents to let me study in us and trying to figure out admission procedures by myself(god bless google) and it’s pretty confusing! Most of admissions in my country is on the basis of score in a single exam. But i am thoroughly enjoying it, kind of rediscovering myself. Any advice is appreciated.

If you’re low income and international, check out Berea College. Good college, will only admit 5% international applicants but those admitted automatically get full tuition and through generous donation + on campus work they get free room&board too.
