I’m new here so if this is in the wrong place, please move it to the right place
I’m having trouble narrowing down what colleges to apply to, and I’m hoping that you guys could help me out.
Here is some information about me:
4.0 unweighted GPA w/ lots of AP courses, 1590 SAT (new), 1520 PSAT
Extracurriculars: 2 sports, president of a business-related club, co-founded another club, some amount of success in math competitions (high score on AIME, USAJMO qualifier)
I am planning on double-majoring in something business-related (Econ, Finance, Bus Admin, etc) and applied math.
I live in California
The social atmosphere doesn’t matter that much to me unless it’s super dead.
If you guys need more information, let me know and I’ll provide it.
I’d like to hear some schools that I should apply to, and I especially need some safety schools.
Thanks
Safety school: UC Riverside (has a Business School) and your local Cal State.
I would apply to several of the UC’s (UCB/UCLA/UCI), Cal Poly SLO and San Diego State.
You could also consider Stanford, USC, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount for privates in California.
As for outside California, look at some of the top elite schools. You are definitely a competitive applicant so you have many choices.
What is your college budget? How much can your parents pay/year?
@Gumbymom Thanks for the suggestions. I think that if tuition is more than 40-45k per year, I’ll probably need financial aid/scholarships.
Your stats could qualify you for merit scholarships at several schools. Every school has a net price calculator to help give you an estimate of costs so run some numbers on the schools of interest. Of course you cannot go wrong with any of the top UC’s.
Best of luck.
Are you looking to stay in California or willing to explore outside of the state? You seem pretty qualified, I suggest applying to a good amount of schools, at least 5! I know too many people who regretted applying to too few schools. Its great that you are thinking of safety schools!
Depending on your major, some schools will be a better choice for you than others. I would recommend looking up schools that are good for your intended program of study. Here’s some general good choices!
UC : Top 5 UC’s currently are Berkeley, LA, Santa Barbara, Irvine, and Davis.
CSU: San Diego State, CSU Northridge, San Jose State, SF State and Fullerton state are great. These are the top 5 CSU’s according to http://www.4icu.org/us/california/.
Private: Private universities are some of the best places you can get your education. Stanford, although perhaps the most competitive in the state, is one example. Definitely apply here! University of Southern California, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, and Pepperdine are other great choices.
Here are some good safety schools and their acceptance rates: UC Santa Cruz (58.4%), UC Riverside (66.2%), Monterey Bay State (49%), CSU Northridge (46%), CSU East Bay (70.3%), University of San Diego (52%).
There are plenty of other schools and safety schools to consider than just these, these are just some of them.
Good luck!
Those stats are very high for all CSU except SLO based on the many I know who were accepted this year. You will get into a good UC. I would say you are a certainty for UCSD. You are going to get in to a great school. Congrats!
Are you interested in private universities or just UC’s?
@dragonsfairies
With your stats you should apply to any school you want to just make sure you apply to a few matches and a safety you like.
Look into
Stanford
UCB
UCLA
USC
UCI
UCSB-
Rice
Emory
Vandy
Duke
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Columbia
U Chicago
UVA
what are your career interests?
I would also recommend Michigan with your business/math interests. I agree that you should apply to some California schools (Berkeley seems ideal with your math interests, I don’t know much about the others). Others I would recommend for strong business/math schools would be Carnegie Mellon and NYU.
@MYOS1634 I’m interested in both privates and UCs.
@VANDEMORY1342 Thanks for the list. I haven’t quite decided on a specific career but I know that I want to do something that incorporates business and at least a bit of math. (Actuary, finance?)
@jjrrdd Thanks for the suggestions
