Because of the whole farm thing I really want to go to a city. I’m actually in love with Boston but I’m looking other places to of course. I’d love to be by a city like Philly or D.C. or Boston but if I really fall in love with a school then I don’t care where I am. Also, I’d really love a school big into its sports because I LOVE sports and actually am very big into college football (you have no idea how badly I wish a school like University of Texas or Florida was a lot closer to where I live hahaha). Religion doesn’t matter to me, I mean I’m a practicing catholic that goes to church every sunday but I don’t care about a school’s religious affiliation I’m fine as long as there’s a church near by to go to.

Yes, Boston is fantastic! I’m from the area so i’m fairly familiar with a few of the schools you listed so I’ll let you in on what I know about them.

BC - hard school to get into but not impossible. jesuit but I don’t think its a huge deal there though you would have no trouble finding a chapel. Beautiful campus but it is NOT in the city of Boston. It’s in Cambridge right next to Boston but it’s only a T ride away. Big party school. It seems to me that some kids go there more for the novelty of going to BC rather than the fact that it is an excellent school. Obviously football is big.

BU - This is THE city school. There really is no campus and you may have to take a bus to go to class. Your dorms and buildings are literally on the streets of Boston mixed in with other non BU buildings. They are not great with aid. I know it sounds horrible to say but to kids in Boston it is has the nick name BJEW because of the huge white upper/middle class jewish population that attend. Hockey is big.

Holy Cross - HC is in Worcester. It is a city but it is not Boston. My sister attends school at Worcester state and she loves it but does admit that a lot of kids stay on campus because Worcester is not the best city to be hanging out in late at night However, there are a lot of other schools in Worcester so that can be a lot of fun. Again, another sports school that is big with football.

Northeastern - Like I said I am applying there so I might be slightly biased. While NEU is in Boston it has its own campus, unlike BU. You are still on city streets but Northeastern has its own area. It is right next to ruggles train station and there are a few other T stops through out campus so it is fairly easy to get around. It is very expensive and again you will get those kids who are only at college because mommy and daddy can pay for them to go to a ten thousand dollar party. There is no football program at NEU but hockey is big. The coop program is the appeal for most of the students and for someone going into journalism it would be tremendous, at least I think so. The typical student goes for 5 years instead of 4 but you can go for 4 if you want. Also, after your sophomore year, you don’t really have a summer anymore because of the coop. I personally think it’s worth it.

I’m not sure where you’re from (I’m assuming New England) but if you have anymore questions about the Boston area since that seems to be where you’re leaning towards let me know! After you’ve thought about the academics, which you’ve obviously done you need to set that aside and think about where you want to be, where you feel comfortable, and who you want to be around. An excellent school academically is nothing if you are not happy there socially.I hope this has helped!

Here’s a link to the post that contains the Common Data Set for many schools:

^^ Actually everything you posted I already knew, I know all about the schools but I want to know if I could really get into them or not. I’ve been to those schools in New England and I feel in love with BC. The campus is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been. I’m actually from Long Island.

O, and Boston College is in Chesnut Hill :)

Like I said I know a lot about these schools and have been to some but I want to know where I really stand because it’s hard to figure out. When I went to see the commom data set all I can find is demographics of the school and not grade reltated things.

anymore advice?

its all much appreciated believe me

Google “freshman profile” and the name of the school. That should pull up the SAT scores of incoming freshman.

How can you find out which schools are most generous with their grants (merit scholarships?)… we are looking for a good small private school for our daughter with a strong GPA). Thank you

This is where most of us on CC learned:
