I’m currently a junior at a midtier high school in Central Massachusetts. I was a transfer here at the beginning of sophomore year from a private school in the St. Louis Area. I currently have a 3.47 GPA taking a mix of honors, AP, and accelerated classes. I got a 1310 on my PSAT but have not taken the SAT yet (I’m taking it in May). My EC’s include Best Buddies, Unified Track, Part time job, InterACT club (volunteering club), and DECA. I am intending to apply to colleges strong in business, particularly the marketing side of things. I’m open to pretty much anywhere, except the Upper Midwest (think Indiana, Minnesota, etc). I want a pretty big school with nationally ranked sports team for that true collegiate school spirit experience. What schools would you suggest I look into?
Classes I’m taking next year:
AP English
AP Psych
AP Stats
honors spanish 4
acc sustainability science
business electives
I think you’ll be happy at any big state school, University of Texas, Florida, Virginia, Michigan, Illinois, Etc, however, your stats really do limit you.
Are you taking Calc AB or Calc HOnors? If not, prioritize over AP Stats and business electives. Colleges and business schools will be more interested in your Calc grade than in whether you took HS accounting.
I would look at schools like Lehigh, Tulane, UMD, Emerson, Villanova, and especially Bryant University. They all have excellent marketing opportunities and are great schools nonetheless. They’re somewhat small but still have sports pride so I’d look into those schools.
Have you looked into the cost of being “open anywhere.” $40k a year is a lot to pay for a college experience. I suggest exploring the options in-state first before you commit yourself to a dream school that will get you a quarter million dollars in debt. I also wouldn’t count on telling yourself that you will get a job that will “pay it off later” just to be on the financially safe side.
Now, to answer your question, here are some schools that I can think of that are heavy in sports, have good programs in general, and are located in the more urban areas of the south.
UCLA, Florida State, Central Florida, LSU, NC State, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, U Miami, Arizona State, Georgia
Talk to your parents about what they will contribute to your college costs.
Then run the net price calculator on the web site of any college of interest.
update everyone! I got a 1380 on my SAT, does that help/hurt me any
Obviously, it’s better - congratulations! However it’s not going to change your list drastically, just makes the odds of a scholarship higher.
