What colleges SHOULD say in their letter...

I think it would be really interesting if colleges put WHY they accepted/waitlisted/rejected you, along with their decisions.
This would never happen of course. It would put way too many people in the know about the process and we don’t want that (lord knows). Another reason this would never happen is that many colleges say that they look at the “total picture”, when I’ve never believed this to be true. Put yourself in their shoes: its a lot easier to judge on test scores and skin color than actually research the quality of an applicant. Of course, I guess they could always lie…

no...

because if they tell youl, it's telling u their formula and how they admit people.

and they cannot let that secret go out.

Nice as it would be to know why they accepted/rejected/waitlisted you, it would be far too time consuming (and you know they're not going to be completely honest). I think you can get a similar report by contacting your regional rep.

i never know what to ask when i talk to the adcom for my area. i would feel awkward asking specific questions like that, like i was pestering them or something...

Just out of curiosity it would be interesting to know how the adcom reacted to your application, but it really doesn't mean anything. A bunch of people looking at a paper summary of you for probably a total of 20-30 minutes are not going to have any insight into how you could be a better person. They reject/deny the application. They don't really know very much about the person behind the application.

At Bowdoin, students who get early notice (in the RD rounds) get personal letters from Admissions Officers detailing what impressed them most about their applications. Just thought you should know. =)

TTG

During RD, the auto-admit applicants sometimes are sent early notification letters saying that they are likely to be accepted. This creates good will so that the chosen applicants are more likely to enroll there.

When I went to Duke, I met my AO. She said that she almost fell out of her chair laughing when she read my essay. I was like...so you liked it? THen, she was like..your here aren't you?

In my mind I was doing cartwheels.

While it would be great for colleges to give reasons for their decisions, it simply wouldn't be practical. Most colleges get thousands, even tens of thousands, of applications every year. It would extremely difficult and time-consuming to write a personal letter to each applicant.

Devil -- you should post a copy of said essay! :-) or email it to me. I'd love to read it.
