What colleges to look at for a future in film?

I'm certain my future lies in the film industry. I love everything about film, it's the epitome of art in my opinion, mostly because it's a culmination of so many different types of art combined into one.

So, for college I'm certain I want to study film in some way. The way I chose most of my to-apply colleges is that if I want to get internships/jobs during my college career, I'll need to be in that prime location in California, since just about every major motion picture studio is in Hollywood, or in the Silicon Valley.

Here is my current list

Pomona College
CMC
Pitzer
Chapman- Dodge College
Occidental
LMU School of Film/TV
Pepperdine
UW Seattle (flagship state, parents making me)
Santa Clara University (no film major, so I'd do creative writing)
University of San Francisco

Here are my "needs" in a college

Less than 10,000 total students. I want a small/LAC feel.

Must have some form of Japanese language classes. I'm considering a minor.

Good opportunity for internships with film studios, which means fairly close to big cities.

Offer Merit/need based aid. ROTC is also an option I'm considering

Decent programs in film/communications/similar majors.

Are you willing to come east? Boston and especially NYC have plenty of opportunities for film. Emerson in Boston and Fordham in NYC have most of what you’re looking for. Neither have Japanese, but if you just want to study the language you can cross-register or take courses at CUNY, or study-aboad.

Wesleyan in Ct

It should be emphasized that Wesleyan’s program is not production based. If you’re mostly interested in film production, screenwriting, and the like, it may not be the best option.

I’m aware that it’s well over your 10,000 requirement, but USC needs to be on your list. It’s an absolute mecca for film studies and production, and you’ll need every leg up you can get in such a competitive field. Like many, you may end up deciding a larger school is not so bad. It’s quite generous with merit aid and has recently trimmed other language offerings to focus on East Asian languages.

Northwestern University [Major in Radio/Television/Film - About the Program, School of Communication, Northwestern University](http://www.communication.northwestern.edu/programs/major_radio_television_film/)

Over 10,000 total but 8,000 undergrad and just 1,200 in the School of Communications, even less in the RTVF major.

Yes Japanese minor

Chicago is close

Offers need-based aid and Navy ROTC

Great program in Radio/Film/Television major. Famous alumni in Communications School: Zach Braff, David Schwimmer, Stephen Colbert

USC (probably the best and well known film school)
UCLA
NYU
Ithaca College
University of Miami (motion pictures major)

Wesleyan is a liberal arts college, so no one will be receiving degrees in sound engineering or “How to Write a Screenplay”. But, I’ve never heard anyone complain that there were a dearth of production or writing opportunities on campus. If anything, the amount of acting, writing and performing on campus is a source of self-parody:

I’m a little worried about going east/midwest, because just about EVERY major film or TV company is located in California. The only exceptions I found were NBC Universal and New Line Cinema, both in New York.

But ok, on that note I’ll look a little bit more at USC. I know it is supposed to have a great film program, and like all the others on my list it has a prime location. The huge amount of people kind of is a turn off though

Also I’m not looking at UCLA, because since it’s an OOS public, I figure they wouldn’t give me any worthwhile aid.

I think as far as internships are concerned a LOT depends on the school’s contacts:

You should take a look at Ithaca college and NYU as well. My brother is at Ithaca and their film program is world reknown. The CEO (or some other high position) of Disney graduated from Ithaca. Students get really good internships in LA too. Don’t worry about going east because it is very easy to get internships in Hollywood at these prestigious film schools.
